Default debug not working

so i remember the first time i tried to get debug to work for me. it was such a chore because i was not used to a mac's file structure, and the actual dom3 executable was hidden. I finally found it, and was able to debug. In fact, I copied the exact syntax to use in terminal to activate dom3 in debug mode, just so I could remember it in the future.

that was then. now, debug isn't working again. I simply copy and paste syntax, and boom, nothing. even if I remove the debug switch, but trying to launch the program from the executable level (rather than from the .app level) the icon jumps up and down gaily (like they do on the mac), but no program is launched, and a message regarding being unable to open guiborder2.tga is given. I can't even launch directly at the executable now! If i just add the switch to the executable, and go back and launch the .app, some thing with the bouncing up and down but no program.

is something changed in 3.17 that for some reason the debug will not work on my mac now? I swear I'm doing the exact same steps I did last time to make it enter debug mode, but they don't work anymore.
