I suspect it was a design decision. Carrier and squaddies have 3 MGs in total. If the carrier has 2 LMGs taking one from the squad then the squaddies dismount taking their LMG with them, you now have 4 LMGs in play two on the carrier and two with the squad - the "shared" LMG has magically multiplied. The code can't move weapons around between units so given that most of the fighting is done by the squad, they get the two guns leaving the carrier with one.
