Possible Bug with colonize same atmosphere?

I have Version 1.41 with no modifications.

I started a game with both of the 'Only Colonize Same Type' and 'Only Colonize Same Atmosphere' options enabled. My race could only colonize Carbon Dioxide Ice planets. So I used troops to conquer some undefended Ukra-tal worlds in order to use their population do build new colonies where I could not. The Ukra-tal colonies are Methane Ice, so I assumed I could use my Ice colony ships to colonize Methane worlds with the Ukra-tal population. But when I try to colonize a world a window pops up saying that I can't colonize an Ice planet. This pretty much ruins the entire game as I had planned to expand by conquering enemy populations that could breathe different atmospheres.

Has anyone else had this problem or know how to work around it?

That's not a bug. That's a feature that you enabled when you checked "Only colonize own atmosphere." You should have not checked it, which would have allowed you to colonize the wrong atmosphere but only using domes (which restricts colony size by a factor of 6). Then you could have used captured pops to get rid of domes or to colonize without domes, as you intended. There is currently no setup choice that causes disabling of domes but allows colonizing with captured pops. Sorry.

What dmm says is true, but it looks like you have stumbled across a small bug anyway: It shouldn't tell you "cannot colonise ice planet" because you can - that's your own race's planet type. It should say "cannot colonise methane planet." Mail it to MM.

Don't scrap the game though, it sounds promising. Remember that your enemies have similar restrictions.

For a workaround, you'll have to find a way to encourage other players to colonise worlds that you want and then trade / steal the planets from them. It might not be easy gtting the AI to do this but let us know how you get on.
