Interface query
Now in my second week of this terrifyingly addictive game. Won first game, abandoned #2 after too many forging mistakes - why is alchemy the only thing in the game which you can't undo?? Very upsetting the first time you find that out.
Anyway, on to my major query: I don't understand the design logic behind choosing the races in a game before choosing the map. I don't even know how many races to choose before I've looked at the map! If I look at a scenario, it sets all the races and difficulty levels to the ones contained in that scenario, even if I then change to a different map! Can someone explain to me why we don't choose the map first, then the participating races?
Also, I once found a link to a doc which listed all the magic sites in the game - could someone repost that for me please (my google skills have deserted me). Is there also a list of all the races' starting assets (units, commanders, magic sites etc.)?
Finally, why does this forum require cookies to log in? Cookies are EVIL. I don't mind if you want to allow some people to use them, that's their business, but surely the rest of us could log in without?
TIA,
CC
P.S. Almost forgot - is there any way to remove a cursed item? I made and wore the armour of twisting thorns, then found I couldn't take it off!

That's a good point. I guess I play on few enough maps that I already know how many AIs I'm going to want on there...in sort of "trial and error" fashion. But your suggestion is a good one.

http://www.bl23c.com/arryn/files.htm should have just about everything for which you're looking.

Cookies aren't evil, only tracking cookies are evil.

Send the wearer into an impossibly deadly situation so that some other poor sap can kill him and find the armor.

Re: Interface query
As for the various guides and lists of items, summons, monsters &etc, you can either look at the official illwinter site or you can download them from Arryn's site. I forget the link, but since the link is in the sig of each of Arryn's Posts, it should not be hard to find.
EDIT: Outposted.

Re: Interface query
I can give you a reason why players are chosen first. Dominions is quite multiplayer oriented and in multiplayer the participating players are fixed. This way all incompitable maps can be greyed out since you have already chosen the participating players.

Of course...leave it to one of the developers to come up with the reason. That makes perfect sense, and I'm glad it's the way it is.

I have discovered another thing that you can't undo: buying provincial defense. Well, you can adjust the amount of pd you're adding up or down, while you are adding it, but once you exit that screen, you can no longer lower it at all. Any additions you make to any province's pd are pretty much permanent once you exit the window; there's no way to get your money back.
Not a big deal, really, but something to keep in mind. I discovered this when I burned myself once by pouring a bunch on gold into one province's pd, thinking I could readjust it later that turn. Oops!

Re: Interface query
Certain maps can set which players already in the game or make certain ones unavailable. So you can choose the players first and have some maps greyed out, or choose the map first and have some player-nations greyed out. I think generally people are more interested in playing a particualr nation than a particular map so I think it works better the way it is to select the nation and THEN have it show what maps you can play on.
As far as undoing things, NOTHING is absolute until you hit "host". So if you feel you have made a BIG mistake you can always hit "esc" and "quit without save" then come in again. There is probably an easier way to restart the turn but thats one I know works.

end turn, click turn (not host), click 'redo from beginning'.

Re: Interface query
Will those "redo" tricks also work in MP when on a network? It seems as soon as I hit "e" as a shortcut (and ugh I misspelled and hit that by accident once) it hosts. Since then, when playing MP network, I live in fear. Sort of wish it could be otherwise.

Re: Interface query
You can change your turn in a mp-network game as long as the server isn't ready to host yet. So, no fear if there are slow people playing with you.
