New style of tech tree
Here is a new idea(I think).
Instead of researching the tech tree by subject, research it by university(or something like that). You would fund the universities with research points. The universities would have a name relating to thier field of research(eg Terran University of Weapon Technology).
This would take quite a bit of work to do, but if someone wants to do it please do!

Re: New style of tech tree
More detail needed.. how would this be any different from what it is now? Aside from possibly obsuring what you get..

Re: New style of tech tree
What he means (I think) is to get a facility to produce tech specific research points.
Which, is not possible to do.

Re: New style of tech tree
I believe that this would be like having a smaller number of general tech areas, but have them deeply interconnected.
eg.
Weapons
Energy
Construction
Propulsion
Electronics
Biotech
Similar to the Stars! tech tree.
So, a shield V requires Energy 8, Electronics 5.
While torpedoes require weapons & propulsion.

Re: New style of tech tree
Although it wears a different face, having a tech tree that uses "collages" instead of functional areas really is no different once you get to the meat of the matter. They both use general Titles to direct research flow.
Also, given that every single AI would have to be changed to reflect the change in terminology, not to mention all the components and even the racial traits, I do not see the benefits of undertaking such a colossal task.

Re: New style of tech tree
No, what I mean is haveing a tech tree similar to what we have now except the catagorys are named after reaserch instutions(yep I picked a better name for them) so it would be like funding a one today.
EG(for weapons reaserch)
Los Almos Laboratory of Weapons Technology
Newman advanced weapons Technology
etc
Is this clearer?

Re: New style of tech tree
If you rename the tech areas, you'll just have to find and replace every instance of the name.
The tech area names show up in:
-components.txt
-facilities.txt
-techarea.txt
-vehiclesize.txt
-intelprojects.txt
-racialtraits.txt
-many AI files
-possibly more
