Default Q-ships

Has anyone created an 'alternate' layout for freighters, with more weapons? I'd like to be able to have the occasional random freighter with cruiser level armament just to make life interesting. It would be cool to see Pirates get toasted by a freighter once in a while, too. I'd do it myself, but I don't know how to figure out where to place the firing points for new weapon mounts.

The firing points are all trial and error in my experience..the Showfiringpoints cheat helps, though.

One thing I have done is make freighters that carry Honor-Harrigton style missile pods. What these are are satellites that can be dropped and act like immobile fighters. Of course, most immobile fighters don't have five one-shot Capital Ship Missile launchers..

EDIT: I should point out that by default the AI doesn't handle these all that well, since it only drops them when it gets fairly close to its opponnent.
