If it doesn't skip shields, does the weapon at least do damage to the shields? So if you keep hitting with the ionic dispersers, eventually the shields would go down and then it will start destroying the engines, right?

Yes, IDs damage shields before the shields are down. They have really good damage ratios, so they are nearly as good as regular weapons for knocking down shields (except for Shield Depleters, of course). The best solution, of course, is to stick a nice shield depleter or two as the first weapon(s) on your warships. Helps with or without using IDs.

It's fun to damage the engines of a bunch of enemy ships so they just sit around, unable to move, costing them maintenance.

That directly contradicts my experience. I remember clearly, as at first I thought the IDs not all that useful...until, while doing some experimentation, I discovered IDs skipped shields in 1.84. I never played any Version *but* 1.84 until 1.91 came out, so yeah, IDs skipped shields in 1.84.

Ok, guys. I checked it once more. Ionic dispersers do damage shields. They dont skip them. I did not know that you have to blow up one engine in one hit. I thought that the damage accumulates. But then I am just wondering why one engine has 20 HP and the standard ionic disperser I or II do 15 or so damage points.

Sorry, can't speak to your experience, but Ionic Dispersers most definetly did NOT skip shields in Version 1.84, What Fyron actually meant to say was they lost the ability in Version 1.78. That was the first public patch where they did not skip shields. The actual change was made in Version 1.70, which was a beta-only release.

That is a darn good question actually. It would seem to make the ID I and II pretty much useless, unless you put it on a LC or larger where you can give it a mount to increase the damage.
To be honest I thought that had been fixed at the same time the mine stacking damage was addressed. I remember it getting mentioned more then once. But I just tested it as well and it's still not stacking. I guess that bug slipped through the cracks.

I don't mind at all that an ID Mark I is ineffective without using a mount. Unmodded techs are easy as heck to research past level 1, and ID's are weenie weapons anyway. Too good with too few counters in the unmodded game. Dang good they no longer skip shields - that was obnoxious. Particularly considering the maintenance and AI issues.
