A.I. ships without formations

Does anyone feel that the AI is better off with "Break formation for ships" set to true?

Since different class ships may have different weapons,wouldn't ships being confined to a formation be at a disadvantage by not being able to manuever into an optimal range and strategy that's more suited for them?

Since no one knows here, I started a game with formations turned off.
