Question Question about BUK

Well as we all know, somebody (separatists/russians?) fired Malesian airplane down yesterday... News told that it made by Russian-origin BUK AA-missile. I just checked Russian and Ukrainian OOB and I didn't found BUK from both OOBs... So, is it there or not? And if it exist there, is it named as SAM or some other name? I'm not expert what comes to AA-systems, so excuse me about silly question...

Warhero
Open Mobhack
Load Russian OOB
type BUK in the "find" box and hit search and unit #289 is found.

(same operation for the Ukrainian OOB shows none, since its called SA-11 there, as Soviet and NATO names are both used in OOBs)

Or:
File->database check utilities
select "Unit Checks" tab
select class 30 (SP SAM) and see what pops up, if not - try the other SAM or AA classes.
click on the unit name in the search report to goto the unit directly (function added in latest release)

Hmm seems like it's available from 1980 to 1983 (in "units" number 289 section)... Is this error or what? Isn't it in service anymore in Russian army? Just in reserve?

If you follow the procedure Andy outlined in post #2 you will also find unit #612.. Buk M1 which has a longer in service date and if you also use MOBHacks search feature for the Ukraine under Unitclass 30 ---SP SAM you will ...surprise, surprise....... find they have them as well......called "SA-11 Gadfly" but the weapon is 9M38 Buk.....therefore, the same weapon system

Then just keep on pressing the search button till it circles round the list then, or use the database search utility to see all candidates at once (database utility shows availability dates).

The database utility is probably the best way since then it's not dependant on you spelling the name (or sub-string of the name) correctly to agree with the OOB designer and/or any local national renaming of kit. You just have to check unit class(es) is all.

And the D/B search utility also has a unit class search field so you can e.g. put in "SAM" and see the various classes with SAM in the name by clicking on the search button multiple times, too.

Fallout Re: Question about BUK

Russia is still using the BUK-M1, in fact until the President confirmed yesterday morning that we have SAT/Radar evidence that the launch originated in the Ukraine in an area controlled by the separatists, credible reports were coming out of Russian BUK-M1 units operating in the same vicinity inside the Russian border. We know a lot of Ukrainian equipment fell into the hands of the separatists with the annexation of the Crimema region and from units that "defected" to the other side. The Ukrainians operate the same system along with a more recently improved local version similar to the Russian improved BUK-M2 (Fielded in 2008.) and it's newer export (BUK-M2E) version.
I present both for those wanting more information on the systems only with capabilities/diferences in general covered in the first section...

Thanks Andy & Don about making this clear. I guessed that they were there but with different names...
