Gem distribution?
Question #1:
Playing random maps, and considering only the placement of gem sites not any "manufacture", is the distribution of gem types purely average across all types, or do certain types occur more/less frequently than others? (I actually mean the total number of gems being produced, given that some sites produce > 1.) For example, it seems to me there are more Death than, say, Fire, but that might be to do with my searching.
Question #2:
A bit more "nebulous", but what if I asked about, say, the total number of each type spent in games? Of course I realise that depends on what nations are in play. But say I meant an average over a number of games with a variety of nations.

#1: You could use Edi's spreadsheet, filter by site rarity, and add up the gem totals for each rarity. That could give you a rough idea.
#2: You can probably assume that any competent player is not going to finish a game with a pile of gems that he didn't use (excluding the game winner, who may not have needed all his gems). So, gems spent should equal gem income. However, they may have been alchemised to other gem types. And you need to factor in gem generator globals and AN, and events which grant or destroy gems. If you have a bunch of accountant friends, get them to buy dom3 and play with you, have them keep track of a gem income/expense/loss for each turn, and then look at the totals when you are done. Of course, that'll only give you info on gems spent by accountants playing dom3.

Thank you, Deathblob. You basically seem to suggest I go off and do the math myself However, since I'm lazy, and enjoy the interaction with other people asking questions here, I'm hoping someone might be able to give me a summary.
Q1 tells me approximately how many basic gems are available. Q2 (sort of) tells me what is actually "needed": for example, perhaps water gems are equally available, but people don't bother so much to gather/spend them. Or, perhaps peeps convert all their gems into pearls and do astral stuff.

As I understand it gem distribution can also be affected by the map.
Certain sites tend toward certain terrains, and in turn those sites tend toward certain gems. So if a game is heavily wooded with few mountains or water you will get probably get more nature gems in the game
