Buffs, AoEs and you

Quick question I'm confident I know the answer to, but with Dominions you never know:

Say I cast a large AoE buff like Legions of Steel on troops that are already in melee, only they will be affected even though enemy troops may be caught in the AoE, correct ? I'm not about to buff my enemies, am I ?

Depends on the spell I guess. Would not know it.

Just tried it with Legions of Steel. Enemies were hit but not affected.
