Default Aircraft Speed

Anybody know how calculate the speed factor ?

SF = max speed/100 ?

If it's that you have an huge amount of errors in the oob

On the other hand it's look a little bit un real to have an aircraft lauching a ATGM or LGB @ mach 2+ near the ground

The guide says
"1 pt of Speed for every 100 km/h"
Assume on top speed without afterburners.

There will be discrepancies becasue there are discrepancies in data for just about any aircraft. Google "Su-24 Fencer" and Wiki will tell you the Fencer has a Maximum speed: 1,315 km/h

FAS.ORG doesn't give a top speed and neither goes Globalsecurity.

airforce-technology.com gives Maximum Speed Near Ground as 1,340km/hr and Maximum Speed at an Altitude of 11km 1,550km/h.

www.globalaircraft.org gives the su-24M 2320 km/h top speed but www.combataircraft.com gives it in knot's and MPH as Max Speed: 1,250 kt / 1,439 mph which is 2315 KM/h and www.vectorsite.net gives it max speed at altitude 2,120 KPH / 1,315 MPH / 1,145 KT but max speed at sea level 1,400 KPH /870 MPH / 755 KT

Do you see a pattern developing here ?

The only source that matched your unnamed source was vectorsite and only at altitude

Do you see why what's in the game might not match whatever source might be quoted at any given moment and that some of these are averages of the wild variations of some of the info available ?

The game standard is Aircraft speed: 1 pt of Speed for every 100 km/h ( it was Imp who "assumed" it was purely the fastest speed )but there will always be variations because of the number of different OOB designers and I can guarantee that some will have used the ground level speed as that's the one we are dealing with in the game and some will have averaged whatever sources there were at the time but it's not always possible to find the two top speeds listed so you go with the best you can find and the best you can find may not agree with any other source as someone years later will point out "you have an huge amount of errors in the oob " when , in fact, what we have is a huge amount of variation in the "hard" data available to us and ANY number we pick could be called into question by anyone at any time simply becasue few sources agree on anything

Generaly my source are :

First,Constructor data :

http://www.sukhoi.org/eng/planes/military/
http://www.dassault-aviation.com/fr/defense
http://www.as.northropgrumman.com/by...ity/index.html
http://www.migavia.ru/eng/
.... and a lot

Second or for old aicraft, specialised site like :
http://www.vectorsite.net/
Ordata ...

At last ressort wiki

Maybe a good start to avoid this kind of discution (i have the best source, no it's me..) is to give a list of "trusted" sources ?

All the game really cares about is whether it's a jet or a prop, really.

That appears at speed 6 (or 9) - cannot recall exactly.

- the aircraft noise changes from prop to jet
- It becomes marginally more difficult to hit with low FC AAA (MGs and old AAA guns). Missiles ignore speed.
- Faster planes move across the map a tad faster per 'pulse', so getting fewer shot opportunities against them. That is about the only (marginal) benefit of aircraft speed. There may be an internal code limitation to that, too.

The game has no concept of "high" altitude (bar level bombers and off-map missile launches, where speed of target is irrelevant). All on-map attacks bar level bombers are down in the weeds lo-lo-lo strafing.

Thus - if we were to be pedantic - the speed should be limited to high subsonic, since that is the only speed that jets will do at that altitude, esp if loaded with ordnance. (Barring say the TSR 2, FB-111, buccaneer and similar specialist aircraft, but that would only be doing supersonic on the deck if laying down a 'special' weapon and otherwise in clean configuration bar the bucket of "instant sunshine").

Perhaps we might therefore look at the OOBs and limit jets to 9 or 10 (say) - since that is the practical limitation for planes carrying ordnace at low altitudes. Anything else is up at medium or high, and probably for airframes with little or no ground ordnance clutter, performing air-air manoeuvring that are irrelevant for game purposes.

I summarize :

Speed vs AA gun/mg (without radar ?)
EW vs IR/Radar missiles

Game code does not care about alttitude but we can "lure" it by the ordonnace carried by aircrafts :

- HD weapons, gun pod, rockets, napalm, light ATGM are typical weapons used for low altitude strike.

- cluster/air burst, heavy bombs need some altitude to have the intended effect or to avoid self destruction

- guided bomb need also some altitude

For example an A-10 carrying Snakeyes and maverick could have better EW (make him harder to lock/detect) than another with Mk82. On the other hand the Mk82's A-10 will flight at higher speed/altitude and make it harder to hit for AA gun's so the SF will be greater.

don't no if i am realy clear
