I'd think not. whenever you equip them with even a single one-handed weapon they lose the lifedrain attack -- I don't think it works through a weapon.

The best thing to do is give them a shield (especially a passive offensive one like charcoal shield). One shield lets them keep the attack, one weapon does not...
