Default fortification defense and sieges + Rituals

If one is being besieged and the attackers break down all of the walls can you forestall a castle assault with the ritual which adds additional fortification points or will they assault you?

I.E. Do you have to cast that spell while you still have fortification defense or can you add those 200 points to 0?

If you can cast it at 0 what happens to the attackers assault orders? Nullified? Assault anyways and you just built the walls for your enemy? Endlessly stymie your attackers plans?

I believe that once the enemy has the Storm Castle Command and has selected it, he'll storm next turn regardless of the castle's current defense (unless he's killed).

Pretty much.

Also, I just remembered that Iron Walls only adds to max defense and not current defense, so it is of no use during a siege.

Thats not true. Just cast it 2 days ago.

I just originally had a fortress of defense 700. Enemy did 154 damage to it. Cast Iron walls. Defense now 900.

At one time, there was talk of something called "magical masonry", but I don't know what ever came of it...

It sounds like the enemy used less troops and/or you increased your troops this round and you gained the difference.

Just made a test game to confirm, and it is true that the max defense is increased and current defense is not.

Huh so you can't use it when beseiged? That makes it a bit less than useful..

Castle defense is really just a buffer between your troops inside and their troops outside. If you suddenly increase the numbers of troops you have inside you can gain back so much defense that even if he brings in more troops to compensate you'll still get a few extra turns of him battering at your walls.

The optimal use is to cast the the spell with 20-30 gems and have it last 10-20 turns, or cast it a few turns before you get attacked.
