ship movement too fast
After playing a while(it varies how long)abruptly the ship movement in the strategic display and combat display will jump up to maximum speed even though the 'fast tactical' option is disabled. I have found that the only way so far to return a 'normal' speed is to reinstall my video drivers. I am running an nvidia card with the last drivers. Fiddling with the 'fast tactical' has no effect and this problem persists even after restarting the game. Puzzled about this........ reinstalling my video driver is a bit of a pain cuz it tends to scramble my desktop big time.

Could you spec your system out for us, and what version of SE4 you have?

It may also be related to use of a winModem.
Rebooting should reset you to normal though.

That thread from the previous reply seems to point to the possibility of some mysterious memory resident application that is causing this phenomena. I will have to have a look at what is running on my system and see if I can scope anything out. Also the issue with winmodems should be a non-issue with me as I am using a router on a DSL line.
I am running a vanilla version of SE4(1.91).
The fact that it persists between game restarts tells me that it is something either in memory or on the HD that is effecting it.

I may have found an answer to this puzzling issue. Check out this link....

It in a nutshell is telling us that if a systems uptime is allowed to accumulate then that can effect how certain animations are processed and displayed.
That will go a long way to explaining why after I reinstall my video drivers things are back to normal for a while. Reinstalling the drivers necessitates a system reboot which resets the uptime back to counting upwards from zero again.
Now, how does one reset the uptime counter to zero without have to reboot the whole system. That may be impossible or I just can't find a method to do it anywhere.
If you are running windows xp you can type 'systeminfo' in the console window and your current uptime will be displayed.
Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree but........

It is not a timer that causes any issues... It is Windows slowly breaking down as it runs. You have to reboot periodically.

I have a problem with animations in some games getting slower and slower and I have to reboot every few hours to fix it. I have Windows ME. It doesn't happen for SEIV, though.
In general, if I don't reboot periodically, all sorts of things start crashing and freezing up, programs terminate without warning, and the computer sometimes resets by itself.

Oh the wonders of Windows ME. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I have learned to restart after I do anything. Even solitare. If I open it I restart before I do anything else. But I can still play most of my old DOS games. It is a trade off.

Well I have found that windows xp is remarkably stable. Up to my last reboot I had 24+ days of continuous uptime and it would still be running if not for this little quirk with SEIV.

Even NT build of Windows slowly eat themselves from the inside out... They are much better than the 9x line, but still have a ways to go.
