Default Not sure this is kosher but......

I was wondering if anyone from this community had tried the game "Starships Unlimited" found at www.apezone.com ?

It received a high review in Computer Games.

I hope this isn't offensive to post this here - SEIV clearly rocks and is a game that will be on my hard drive forever... I was just curious as the game 'style' looks very different between these two games (SEIV is much larger in scale, SU looks much more streamlined...) and thought I would ask if anyone had an opinion/review yet?

While reading the review of that game, I stumbled upon this link to a new Version of OS/2 game Galactic Civilizations. Wow. That brings back memories...

BTW, this article mentions that the new Gal Civ may emulate the ministers feature found in Space Empires IV. I missed that bit the first time I read the review. It's extremely cool to see the far-reaching influence Space Empires IV is having on the genre.

The galatic civilizations screen shots remind me a lot of Space Empires IV - perhaps there is more than just ministers being emulated?

GalCiv predates SEIV so this is unlikely. Indeed, it seems possible that SEIV is actually emulating many features of this much older game--possibly even including the ministers.

I've played Starships Unlimited and enjoyed it. I don't like the small scale of the game, however, as you rarely have more than 5 ships, and I can't conceive of the headaches one would have trying to control 10. The combat system is interesting, and I like how you can configure your ships, but I found the scale to be far too small for my tastes. It takes forever to get colony tech (took me a while to figure out that you can't research and build at the same time), and managing colonies can be a pain too. Still, it's worth trying.
