Default The "Survivor" Space Empires IV Multiplayer Tournament is over

Yes, that's right. It's over.

The winner: Askan, aka Askan Nightbringer, intrepid leader of the mighty People's Empire of Night.

The final round was a three way, three game head-to-head round robin affair with Askan facing off against Master Belisarius and Yohan. ALl three players deserve congratulations for making it this far. All three defeated many worthy opponents along the way to earn the right to be in the finals. Any of the three would have been worthy to be crowned champion, and I believe if we replayed the final round, any of the three could be expected to win.

But on this day, Askan was the best of the best. Congratulations.

Thanks to all who participated. Much has changed since April of Last year when I first started talking about this tournament. The first games got under way some time in June and despite losing time to vacations, terrorists, and server malfunctions, we managed to get through 24 players, and four rounds in under a year. Not bad.

Thanks again to all.

Congrats Askan!

(After having my butt kicked by you many times I should have started a betting pool, I would have raked in the money!! )

Any most memorible game moments?? (My favorite PBW moment was the time I blew up a star with a cloaked star destroyer leveling a fleet of 150+ ships )

A very deserved victory im sure it was, Congratulations Askan!

Favourite moment from the tourney...

When my fleet of 15 ships took on a fleet of 62 (ok some of his were minesweepers, and support ships, but 1-2 of mine were as well). And my fleet came out with only the loss of a single support ship, and the other fleet was utterly destroyed except for a few stray support ships who were in corners to far for my fleet to reach in 30 turns.

What were the sizes of these ships, Battle Cruisers vs. Escorts?

Cries of joy are heard around the Empire of Night. The Speaker has delivered his promise, and now all that the People see has been crushed under their heel. Its a time for the decomissioning the fleets of Phantom, Wraith and Ghost class ships, building the infrastructure to nurture the People and lots of partying.

First a big thanks to Geo for organising the tournament, you are truly a legend.

I'de also like to say that I've learnt something from every player I've ever played.
Thanks especially to Deathstalker, Capnq and Spoo in the first round battle and our subsequent rematch where most of my ideas for strategies came from.
Thanks also to the players I met in round 2, 3 and 4, being Belisarius, Toy4x4, Menchenfresser and Yohan (and sorta Geo when he took over for a player who quit).
And a thanks too for the guys in the Maelstrom and Handicap games (the two large games I played til the end).

If I'de have to say what the best moment was I'de choose the Round 3 game vs Menchenfresser, when I brought down his much larger empire to a manageable size with a couple of destroyers with stealth armour and planetry napalm. Nothing beat the tension of moving the ships into place over 10-15 turns, hoping he wouldn't build sensors or mines, then finally attacking with devastating success.

And finally 3 tips for everyone out there for these sort of small games.
1) Rock is much better than ice/gas.
2) Use mines early and quickly to restrict movement of your enemies and force them into that lengthy build minesweeper cycle, plus protecting yourself from fatal stealth armour attacks.
3) Offensive/defensive bonuses!

Cheers all,

Askan

No, most of my ships were LC's IIRC, as were his. We both may have had a small % (say 15%) of our fleets as cruisers though as it was at that point in the game where the two of us were upgrading our fleets.

It was a great game. And although i was ultimately the loser of that match, it was still quite thrilling till the end with both of us losing homeworlds at basically the same time =) My thanks to Yohan for a great match
