Default Ground Combat

How exactly is ground combat formulated. Does range matter? I'm redoing the troops in my personal mod and have created units that ranges of up to 6. I thought that I read somewhere where range doesn't matter. So what is the process for conducting the combat. Thanks in advance

Unless this has been changed lately neither range nor reload time matters in ground combat.

That's correct. Range and reload time are ignored (they are used when these components are mounted on fighters, only). All damage for each round appears to be assessed "simultaneously" (i.e., damage is added up for each round for both sides BEFORE being applied - you can't avoid getting shot by shooting the enemy first, except for later turns). Shields only started taking effect in ground combat in Gold patch one. ECM and sensor bonuses apply the highest rating on one side to all the units on that side.
