WW1 Query
Yes, we're back here again! And before anybody says anything no, I'm not asking for anything to happen in the next release, which I suspect is imminent.
However, a few years back Andy said that it would not take a major code change to take WINSPWW2 back to Jan.1914 - the devil was in the detail, ie re-compiling all the oobs. Right, that's done, at least in outline. As I know you guys don't like completed oobs thrown at you, I attach the changes for Romania and Thailand, plus an overview of what I've been trying to do, and my references. I'd be grateful if you'd have a look (probably after March) & let me know what you think. All the oobs have been modded, I'm just bringing them up to speed with all the latest ammo/radio changes.
As well as WW1, I have also been trying to improve the compatibility between WW2 and MBT, so some the changes I've made have been in this regard also. They are duly noted.
I'd love to see it, because WW1 CAN be fun, and despite Troopie's best efforts, I still can't play the DOS version.
Cheers

Re: WW1 Query
Sorry to see this being ignored. If winSPWW2 could be easily stretched to cover the WW1 period, it would be great.

Re: WW1 Query
I think it would be a bit more than just making new OOBs there would have to be some code changes to & I cant see most people enjoying it.
This would mainly be static battles with sides sat in trenches & huge artillery presence hampering movement further should you try an assault. most kills would be scored by the arty & I am guessing MGs.
The AI would probably be cannon fodder if it assaulted & the human player would spend most of his time trying to rally troops if he tried it.
Sounds boring to me plot arty move a couple of units, rinse & repeat

Re: WW1 Query
you can already get a "flavour" of how bad it would be.
set your date as early as possible - say 1930, Ger V GB
set preferences to a tall, narrow map (you will be trudging through mud and shellholes on foot)
for the map. use #240 (Western front). it is already there - and 241 for the Italian front
Artillery delay should be rather long (but still far too quick really)
Only allow any defender gold spots (he will have telephone links)
Only allow a defender to have FOOs (there are no radios even if the game insists on giving them to command elements) - defender FOO may have telephones.
Only play advance or really, assault battles
Only buy arty, and leg grunts - and maybe a few early tanks.

Re: WW1 Query
There are other threads about this but every once in awhile someone starts a new on and off we go down this rabbit hole again.
Altering the code to make the game PROPERLY playable ( i.e not just the dates which was the original offer <> ) for WW1 would NOT be a trivial code change "easily done" and it won't be done becasue neither of the two people who could make it happen are the least bit interested in doing so.
Thread now locked and stickied so we don't go though this again down the road.
