Default Good defense against missiles?

I'm just starting out. Fun game.. but everyone i'm playing with (also new) likes to use missiles. Whats a good defense against them? I'm already buildling Point Defense weapons which seem effective. How well do shields work? Whats the best strategy against ships that like to be heavy in missiles and fire form max range?

Point defense are your best bet.
Research them up to Level 5 (not too expensive) and load every attack ship with at least a couple of them.

(Don't load a ship with ONLY PD, though. In strategic combat, they will simply run for the corners.)

The other disadvantage of missles is the reload delay. Rush in there with a few ships with 1-turn-reload weapons, and it won't take long.

Shields work fine, but also look into armor. Especially the advanced armor makes a very good defense.

Point of Defense is it.

Some put one of two per ship and others build ships with mostly PoD cannons on them.

If you do the second, build them with one regular weapon a beam or something, because otherwise if you ever use strategic combat a ship with only point of defense will run from combat.

You'll find that missles are only effective against badly designed fleets and ships. Although I have run into several planets that had so many missles even a fleet of ships with one or two point of defense cannons a piece could have taken a good hit.

The best thing to do in tactical is to move your fastest ship into range of the missle ships, have them all fire on this one ship, and then have it haul *** in the opposite direction, while the rest of the fleet moves in on the enemy as they attempt to rearm.

If your organic build a ship with 1 mc, max engines, 1 supply, 1 weapon (refire rate 1) or a weapon that skips shields and armour, 1 boarding party, 1 security station and the rest organic armour. Put it on point blank.
Send these puppies in.

Don't forget to support them with your own missle ships and pd ships.

P.S. Use the biggest ship you can.

Not only do they disrupt the enemies formations. But they can take a lot of damage.

There are all kinds of variants to use,(aka different strokes for different folks)
What I do, Design PD ships, but again make sure you have at least 1 beam weapon or in strategic they run for cornors, no problem in Tactical. I usually use cruisers, put as man pd's as possible, build 3-5 for each fleet, support them with fast 1 turn fire weapon ships to rush in when the enemy fires his seekers. (be careful, if your opponet is smart he'll be supporting his msl ships as well. Also some other weaposn will also fire on msl, in temporal you have the, can't think of name off hand, look like white punkins, fire every turn, 4x damage, etc. ck which other weapons will fire not only on msls but on ships as well, (later tech) Ftrs armed with some of these weapons will also shoot msls. also over planets put sats with pd's/weapons and put some pds on wp and bs's.

But like stated in this thread, everyone has their own style, find which is good for yours and you should be ok. best advise experiment with what everyone here says and see which one you like best.
