Default Subgenres of strategy genre?! HELP!

Thank you for coming here!
I am writing an article for an gaming site and its about strategy games. I need to come up with subgenres of strategy games like: space empire, earth empire, tactical, RTS, medival.... Please help me! Just tell me what do you think that subgenres should be. If its good it could turn around that site and make history. Really.

Well, I am by no means a grognard, but I do own a few strat games and have played quite a few.

Just by your list, you are missing turn-based, which I am sure you knew. My personal theory on lines of division stem not from setting or style necessarily, although that certainly has some say, but according to detail.

In Plato's world of Ideas there are two strategy games: one for the ordinary player who isn't a strategy game enthusiast, and one for the hardcore player. This may stem back to those of us who liked to play pen and paper and those of us who didn't. The same may be said for RPGs as well, but to a lesser degree.

Take for instance Warcraft, which is RTS and is played by numerous people who normally are not strategy game players, and which we'll say arbitrarily, that it is on one end of the spectrum (although, I am sure some of you will come up with a less complicated game to name, it is the only one that comes to my mind), and, again arbitrarily, Steel Panthers is on the other end, which I know is not the most complex but is well on its way and still very popular.

Then we start placing all games along this line. SSI's 5 star series, Civ series, Blizzard's warcraft/starcraft series, AOE series, and on and on and on....and of course SE4.

In my feeble mind, a fundamental question asked when any developer is conceiving a game must be, am I making this for the enthusiasts or for the general public....and this all lies in it's realism, complexity, (for some) modifibility (not sure if that is a word), and scope.

Just something to think about.
