Default Troops riding on top of APC?

I've noticed this happen at least twice now. a apc or ifv is assulted by hidden infantry and the troops monted are killed but the vehicle recieves no damage, but only suppresion.

now, this can only happen if the troops are riding on top, and not actually inside. Is this a feature or a glitch?

I think it simulates a situation where the mounted infantry/vehicle spot the danger in the last seconds, manage to dismount and doing so manages to prevent the AT-weapons from hitting the vehicle, but the infantry is mauled dismounting...?

In reality it could go as follows:
-vehicle with infantry mounted, yet unbuttoned (commander/troops with open hatches) spots the enemy trying to make the shot (the AT-man may have to move to get clear shot and doing so is spotted)
-mounted infantry opens fire from the open hatches, not hitting anything, but pinning down(/forcing to take cover) the guy(s) with the AT-weapon(s)
-vehicle stops and dismounts
-the rest of the ambushing squad open fire with small arms and nail the dismounting infantry inside/barely outside the vehicle
(-the vehicle manages to withdraw to safety or is left in the open to receive the next shot)

It's normal that the mounted infantry rides with open hatches/vehicle commander is unbuttoned, and most IFVs/APCs have the ability for the squad fire from withing the vehicle even if there are no troop hatches. Even if the infantry in the vehicle doesn't see the enemy, if commander commands "fire left side, disembark!" the blind firing may cause the enemy to take cover briefly.

I can understand that, but this breif clash leads to the death of most of my squad, and still leaves on unspotted enemy.

Ah, the ambusher is left unnoticed. That sound odd indeed.

All depends on luck and skill if the ambusher is sotted or not, or if the ambush fails and the passenger troops then notice the attackers and squirt some lead into their faces.

However, putting a sniper or 3 man scout on escort duty is not a good idea for thier health, if the enemy is using 12+ man sections .

Cheers

Then again a hit penetrating the "cargo" bay of an armored vehicle doesn't neccessarily kill thw whole vehicle.
I remember I report on telly I saw about some poor Soviet fella whos BTR was hit by a Mujaheddin RPG in Afghanistan.
He was the only memeber of the infantry squad who was unarmed. And so was the crew of the BTR which wasn't even immobilized by the attack...
