Default Saving and Quitting

Uh, is there any difference at all between the "Save and Quit" and "Quit without Saving" options?

It appears to me that the game is saved when you hit the Host button. After that, there is no way to return to a previous turn, unless you make backups using the operating system. Is "Quit without Saving" implemented for the limited purpose of undoing things you've ordered in one turn but haven't executed yet with the Host button? That seems odd.

I like the no-save-and-reload default. It's like Iron Man in Civilization. Every once in awhile, however, I do want to be able to reload, to solve some mystery. Last night, for example, I sent 18 awesome Ulm armies, including over 100 black cavalry units, many spellcasters, and scores of uber magical units including Iron Dragons, against the Last castle of the Jotun, which was occupied by just one single unit, the Frost King pretender. Although I inflicted 8 or 9 injuries on him, and got him down to 4 hit points, he still routed my huge army.

I wanted to go back to replay that with new tactical experiments. But no dice--I'd already executed it.

My pretender (a rainbow Sage) was taken down to 6 hit points and he routed by himself off to a remote island. On the next turn, somewhat bewildered, I just did one move--moving my pretender to a city with many of my units. Upon executing the turn, I got a notice saying the enemy pretender had died and I was the winner.

But I don't know why he died! And I don't have any way to go back!

Am I missing something?

No, unless you keep copies of the .trn files. But the enemy pretender's death does not make you win - you'd have to give a more specific message. Reasons include:

1) His dominion drops to 0.
2) His provinces drop to 0 (if he has a castle, it is "his" province as far as winning goes).

That's it. Probably 1. But as to why he could have died (which are not important):

1) You gave him a disease, and his HP drop 1/turn, and he died.
2) Indy invasion (Vinemen, barbarians, etc).

Thanks. That was my first victory. I'll probably be playing all the time for months.

I suppose I was inaccurate. When I got the victory message, I assumed the enemy pretender had died. In fact, however, the map province info display still showed him by himself in his Last castle in his Last province. (I figured that was a bug, but I see it wasn't.) But his dominion had dropped to zero. Ok, mysterious. Hard to believe that a god in his own castle after a big victory would not still own a whiff of dominion. But I had built castles in every territory around him, with temples and preaching priests, and I guess that wore him down.

Still mystifed why there is a "Quit without Saving" option.

Quit without saving quits but does not overwrite your old orders. So you if you do bad alchemy you quit without saving and reload, and do it right.
