Default OT: Just Curious?

Off Topic I know...but I was curious?

How many people here are part of, or have been part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism)?

Officially, the Society for Creative Anachronism is a Medieval 're-enactment' society which tries to recreate the more pleasant aspects of medieval life while pretending not to notice the less pleasant aspects. In practice, it's a sort of amalgam of historian/antiquarian, 'back-to-the-land'/survivalist, neo-pagan, and FRPG player interests. Many (if not most) members fall into all four catagories plus a few more. Your local SCA group is generally a great place to find advice on things like survival crafts (soap making, hand weaving, small-scale animal husbandry, sustainable/organic farming) and to get in touch with all or most of the 'alternative' communities in your area.

People who act out the middle ages, including mock battles.

Personally, I think the whole thing is a little weird.

Except for the swords. I like swords. The real me likes swords the way my avater likes hammers.

I used to be in it because a friend was in it. The members weren't very friendly though and they seemed to have an enchanted view of the middle ages. As said they wanted to reenact it, but as one of them told me not anything that could be controversial. I mentioned the crusades (Knights vs. Saracens) and they said something along the lines of "oh, we avoid any of that sort of stuff"
