Default Maximum range vs. planets

The following happened to me in a simultaneous game: a ship of mine armed exclusively with CSM 5 (no point defense) attacked a planet defended exclusively with DUC weapons platforms. The strategy on my ship was "maximum range", with a primary movement strategy of maximum range, and a secondary strategy of "optimal range". I was hoping the ship would fire missiles from standoff range so it would not be affected by the DUC's, but it charged right in and was destroyed. Is this a bug or feature?

How strange. Was the ship part of a fleet?

Nope, just a lone ship not assigned to a fleet.

Did it fire off the first volley, then move in? I'm guessing optimal range caused it to move in too close while it was reloading. You probably want to change it to max range/dont get hurt. Try some simulator battles with different strategies and see what happens.

I've found that the range strategies don't seem to apply to enemy PLANETs, only to enemy ships.

My example: a powerful fleet easily capable of defeating all enemy in the sector including their homeworld. I wanted to SAVE the homeworld so I could use the population, so in the strategies window I activated "Don't fire on Planets".

Even though the strategy was set to "Max weapons range" and "Don't get hurt", they would bLast apart the enemy ships and then just sit there in range of the enemy planet getting pounded by missles until turn 30 (having killed all valid targets).

And when I DO turn on Planets as a valid target, they rush right up to it and fire away until it is dead.

Anyone want to do some more testing? Is this a verified bug?

A great stradegy in a turn based game is to rush in with a small ship eqiupped with a plauge bomb and then bombing the planet and running away to fight another day. However, in a PBW game where you must use strategic combat the stradegy does not function. The ship runs in, plauges and then sits there until it dies. I don't understand. Is there a way to effectivly conduct your military operations without dying all the time?
