Default Land forts for water nations and vise versa

Is there a sense for Rleh to build fort/lab/temple combo on land? Will it give possibility to recruit units and mages?

And what if land nation builds in water?

Land nations can't build forts in water unless they have underwater forts set. LA Atlantis and LA Mictlan do, others don't. R'lyeh can't recruit its mages from land forts, I think, but it can recruit native independents and possible site recruitables. The fort would mainly provide a strongpoint and a resource boost for recruitment.

R'lyeh can however recruit hybrid troops, commander and star childs at coastal land forts and they do get some freespawn hybrids - both in MA and LA.

LA Jomon can build underwater forts (with new UW units) as of patch 3.23.

I just tested and it seems LA Mitclan can't build UW forts.

Slightly dissapointing as LA Atlantis does get interesting different units from UW forts and LA Mitclan has pretty much the same theme.

Star children are fine cheap magi. Assassins with S1. The hybrid troops are pretty crappy but free is good. Now this is MA and LA. EA Ryleh gets nothing useful from a fort on land except the ability to protect the province and protect the temple. Unless there are independent magi, don't make a lab.

Or if you want to make a beachhead to gateway troops into that province.

Hybrid troops have a gold cost and hence also an upkeep cost.

Good point Graeme. There are reasons for a lab on land, but not to get recruits much.

There actually is often a decent reason to build land forts for UW nations - shielded infantry & archers. Indie troops can round out the UW nation's roster decently in some situations (Atlantis for instance can cast flaming arrows), particularly if you get some of the slightly exotic indies like elephants or longbows. Its a vector lots of people overlook, and a shielded heavy infantry unit can go along way when you've got a lot of arrow vulnerable dudes as national troops.
