Default Proposed Ships Limit Change (idea)

Just sitting around thinking up new ways to have se4 games and I thought of something that might spice up a few games. We already have a ship limit and Unit limit for the game in numbers (ie, max 100 ships, 1000 units, or whatever) but how about changing this to 'Max Tonnage Limit' for ships?? That way a player could have his tonnage limit maxxed out by just a few base ships, or a massive fleet of frigates??

So is this idea interesting at all, or am I just thinking too hard again??

Two: that we are desperate for our lives to make sense, to have meaning,--and at a great enough remove , all memory is malleable." -Michelle West 'Sea of Sorrows', SunSword book IV.

In theory this is what the ship maintenance does. Most games resources are not much of a problem. Most players lower their maintenace costs.
This can even be done without a mod just have all players not lower their maintenance or even have to increase it. Suddenly you have to make hard choices on what kind of navy you are going to build and you will never have enough resources (good luck on trying to build lots of expensive ships). People would suddenly have navies mirroring our own real life navies. Picket ships, escorts, patrol cruisers a handful of capital ships. It is a good Idea for a different type of game.

I would like those 5,000 unit/ship limits to be lifted to the max the game can support.
(IE. Whatever the index variable's overflow point is.)
The user can always choose a smaller value.

I'm one of those players who never lowers maintenance costs...I find that it really limits the number of big ships I build, and changes the way I use them. To me this seems more 'realistic.'

That's a very interesting idea if the AI can adjust. I'd prefer some sort of "command points" system like MOO II had, personally. You could either have another "speciality" facility, the "command and control center" that generates command points, or you could have population generate a certain numbr of points points per million. It does require a certain amount of civilian population to provide crew and general support for a ship, after all. This way, you'd have to adjust your military strength according to the real size of your 'civilization' supporting it.
