Is Dom3 built on a new engine?
Just curious if Dom3 is built on a new engine or does it use code from the previous games?

I should amend my question and ask about what percentage of the code is new? For example, is the AI engine completely redone? How about the modding engine? The graphics engine? Etc.

AI is improved [castle building and some other things afaik] so the code is surely upgraded there. Modding gonna be much more powerful, ergo its updated as well. The gfx engine is updated [the battle engine] it was mentioned before.

And they don't throw away bad code either, as they know it could get in handy for an Obscufated Code contest.

I'd say that 80%+ has been kept. Graphics engine redone, some new features (RMG being the biggest one IMHO) and tweaks but basically Dom2 &3 share the same foundations from what I've seen (and I've seen much )

There are differences in how the units and some of their abilities are handled, but how much differences, I don't know.

Re: Is Dom3 built on a new engine?
I doubt they started from scratch. But I remember Johan saying that they went to compressed .rgb (sgi) files for maps and sprite images. Plus the changes to how sound files are done, different screen resolutions, different audio support, adding a map generator, rewriting the AI fairly extensively it sounds like, zoomable commander tokens. Then there is all the network code to allow for compression and transmitting of maps along with turn files.
All in all I would hate to guess the percentage of code that has changed.

Just to comment on the "get a laptop" thing, I'm going away for a year to do something like the mormons do, like a mission, except different. 0 access to any kind of entertainment.

Oh, I see. You will wear your robe and robe-belt, travel by foot and starve yourself, and then start reanimating ghouls in a far-away province so that your undead masters can claim the province to their ancient empire. I've read about that somewhere.
