Default Hired help always accepts offers?

I tend to like to hire people during my journeys. I often will provide them a low-level weapon, system, or drive as payment. On many occasions, I get a warning that the hired help cannot use the item I am providing. I'm asked if I want to try anyway, and without fail, the hired help signs on.

So in effect the warning to me seems either broken or useless as I offer the item anyways even if warned that the hired gun cannot use it and they sign on everytime.

Is this an unusual experience or are others having it?

I guess that's normal.
It seems the mercenary is unhappy that he can't install the item on his ship, but accepts the payment anyway, because it can be sold for profit later on. At least that's my explanation.
But if you ignore the warning the given item (and the points you get for it) will be lost. Therefore other ship systems that don't replace existing ones are preferrable - which means things like cloaker, scramblers, scanners, antigraviton shunts, nebular plows and repair bots.

In other words, the "hiring" system is a pointless mess.

If you offer something they don't want, they'll work for you anyway and disintegrate the payment.

If you offer them something they do want, and that upgrades something they already have, they'll disintegrate the replaced equipment.

If you offer them something they want, whether it's an upgrade or not, you can immediately take it away from them.

I've had them refuse something... I think...

what you need to do is offer something they don't have one of so that they don't throw out the old one, and then take it back if you want.

so not a better shield if they already have a shield. that crappy shield can be traded on the klak planet for something good.

nebula detector, plow, either of the radars... those are good.

Yep, I think I agree with you folks. The hiring system is a bit goofy, but I try to play within the confines of it. I don't think it's fair to take away an item I gave, but I suppose I could be a pirate and unscrupulous enough to do it

AFAIK, they'll accept anything that can be mounted onto the ship and only refuse plain "stuff".
