Regarding Shermans in WinSPWW2, obviously these kinds of minor details wouldn't really show up. One interesting idea I had a while back for the game was the inclusion of common late war (45) modifications in use in Western Europe, such as:
- improvised concrete armor

- coaxial MG replaced with mostly useless AA .50 cal

Let me put it this way....... I have
ZERO interest in adding them into the OOB's (even less than "fixing" the "error" with the Russian aircraft having red stars some bright spark reminds us is "wrong" every decade or so ! ) but
it is something someone building a scenario could incorporate. The tools to change armour values as been in the game for a long time.
This kind of " you did it in OOB X then you should do it in OOB Y" was old 20 years ago when I first started hearing it. We do something "special" then that becomes the wedge in the door
