With specific reference to BM, the AI isn't so great at managing multiple war fronts, particularly with matching specific vehicle types against specific empires. They do have some ability to adapt their vehicle designs against their enemy, but a broader strategy adjustment routine is in the works for v1.20.
Simultaneous mode is generally more fair to the AI, since they are not able to react to new information gained during the movement phase of a sequential movement game.
Although Alliances are working better in the latest SE5 patch, the BM AI hasn't been optimized for working within an alliance, although they can vote somewhat intelligently.
