I think he more specifically meant Polypal Spawns. It's hard to say where an Aboleth reaches maturity, they seem to kind of evolve to more complex forms at various stages in their life. But as Polyps, we can definitively call them "children" still, and there's no room for debate.
Beyond that, it's a mystery to human scholars.
