Big: A W9 bless for your knights is one strategy. Personally, I tend to go with the Mermidon 'rush'. Pick high Order/Productivity and just start pushing them out. Indys just fall over to them.
As far as later strategies, you again have several options. One thing you should do is start looking for Nature sites ASAP to find the castles that are actually none-too-rare underwater. IIRC, you also can forge Clams naturally. Especially if you take an Astral pretender, you can get a Clam economy running quite early. Finally, you could take an Earth pretender of some sort, find the Earth sites, and then make a Dwarven Hammer to make those Clams cheaper.
