1. You can cross stars as much as you want, with as many ships as you want whenever you want. There are no harmful effects, and you do not need special "starlanes".
2. There is no way to make the game remember certain settings, such as galaxy type, size, events severity and frequency, number of racial points, number of starting planets, etc.
3. You can load previously saved racial set-ups using the "Add Existing" button that is unavailable in the demo. For some reason this was disabled for the demo, not sure why. But rest assured, in the full game you can save however many different players and player set-ups as you want.
4. The Design name file is a list of names in a text file that can be used in-game to name your ship classes. When you design a ship, there's a drop-down menu that allows you to choose a new name for the ship class you are creating, and that's where the design name file comes in. There are literally hundreds floating around somewhere, with thousands of different names.
