I just meant that technically Gold could have been applied as a patch.
It is essentially the exact same game, just with more patch feature upgrades to the executable and data files. However, the Gold CD has a lot of extra features on it that make it more than a patch.
Tons of custom ship sets, mods, modding tools, etc. are included on the CD. Too bad Gold didn't do the other major aspect of a Gold Version by having balance fixes...
