Re: Recon with vehicles

The British 1944 TOE for the Armoured Division had the divisional Armoured Regiment equipped with Cruiser tanks, i.e. Cromwells and, I suppose, Shermans. Until 1943, the regiment was equipped with...

Re: Sniping

I've just read Buckleys book about British Army in Normandy and he quotes a few stats on tank crew casualties from the ORS reports.

50% of losses happened to crews while inside their tanks.
13%...

Re: 2024 Game Updates

Just happened to pass by the forum and noticed that the final winSPWW2 update was up.

My harddrive quit on me a few years back and killed my winSPWW2 installation, so I haven't played in a while....

Re: Surviving Prokhorovka: German armoured longevity on the Eastern Front in 1943–1

You get a similar and even bleaker picture when looking at period from November 1942 to March 1943. In February 1943, the Germans clearly revised the numbers for vehicles lost in that period,...

Re: 20 years

Celebrated the 20 year anniversary by buying the CD version. Haven't played much in the past many years, but thought I'd give it a go again.

France vs Germany May 1940 and I have a sneaky FCM-36...

Re: Dust

Dust appears to have been a significant tactical factor in combat. Both intentionally, used as a ruse or camouflage, but also unintentionally, being just a fact of desert combat. A quote:

On 11...

Re: Tank machine guns

I believe the T-34 "sight" you refer to is a post-war modification. You'll notice that the sight does not go all the way to the sighting hole in the MG mantlet. I suspect the modification is made to...

Re: Anyone seen or heard anything about this

Yet the Henschel factory February 1944 data reports vehicle speed @ 3000 rpm...:D[/QUOTE]

Yep - no wonder that such a bunch of scatterbrained hippies lost the war :D

Re: Anyone seen or heard anything about this

I can say with some experience that getting "every detail of the weapon/vehicle database correct" to the point someone won't nitpick some detail that doesn't agree with their source is an impossible...

Re: Sometimes you just have to laugh

In theory, but it is probably not that much of an issue for modern western armies, as they are small, conflicts likely to be either short or low intensity and logistics not much of an issue.

I...

Re: Danish TO & E

Came across these, showing the UK 17-pdr anti-tank gun in use with the Danish Army in the 1950ies.

For someone who spends most his time studying WWII, there is something interestingly odd with...

Re: Normandy 1944

With performance like that, you wonder why they ever bothered developing nukes.... :)

Frankly, I think statements like this: "In one episode where Bletchley’s code-breakers played a vital role,...

Re: Firing a German Pak-40 75mm Anti Tank Gun

Probably just a matter of size. Once anti-tank guns grew to 75mm and beyond, concealment was a one-shot affair. Size and firing signature (debris and muzzle flash) would probably rule out any chance...

Re: MBT's

You forgot the 50mm range (German 5cm guns, British 6-pdr) :)

It could be argued, that in terms of caliber, not much have happened since the 1950ies. After all, British, German and US tanks all...

Re: Mounted infantry shooting

I think it is the other way around. When the Panzergrenadiers aquired APCs, it was seen as transport only. Hence its early designation as "Gepanzerte Mannschaftkraftwagen" (litt. armoured...

The fundamental problem with this argument is that the Tiger was not designed specifically to fight other tanks :)

Re: Minimal range for indirect artillery fire?

The two German infantry guns - the 15cm and the 7,5cm were used in much the same way as mortars would later be. Their design was based on WWI experience with mortars - "Minenewerfer" - and the two...
