One thing to keep in mind if you're trying the old vinewhip + Berserking unit trick is that berserking gives 2 fatigue per round (regardless of action/encumbrance) and that if the units fatigue goes...

Pretty much, Prisons of Fire has double the range so it's a lot easier to use, but false fetters will likely immobilize for a longer period/snare more mammoths.

Going by a glimpse, it appears that after it's moved it has an equal chance to attack any square; If you're being bombarded with horror marks and the like it won't move towards those (allied) units...

The wiki might be wrong on that part; I haven't seen it attack any allied units yet. Seems to act as your normal every-day scriptable commander.

Patrolling kills minimal population (We're talking 10-30 pop) it's the overtax that gets you; Taxing at 200% is very common early on...

2-4 hours is pretty common for a blitz; No reason they couldn't span over multiple days if needed.
