Mac ain\'t workin\'. How do you run an FTP game?

How do you run an FTP game? Any apps to make it painless? Why do I want to run the game on FTP? Because leaving my computer on is absolutely no longer an option. I don't want to shorten the life of my expensive computer having to run dominions servers for months at a time.

What's a FTP game? You mean PBEM game? Put all the *.2h files you get into the savegame directory, host the game, send the *.trn files back.

Nay dood, not PBEM. I'd imagine FTP is a lot easier. It would be hell to have to sort through my e-mail, downloading turn files, etc.

What exactly do you have in mind? I don't think you want to give players ftp access to your game directory, or they could retrieve/upload anyone's turns, or the fatherland file. If you have them upload do a different directory, you have as much file management (approximately) as a PbEM game. How do you imagine this working?

That being said, Macs do have file sharing and ftp daemons. File sharing can be enabled from the Sharing panel of System Preferences. I think for OS X client edition, you need to enable ftp from the command line. OS X server has a GUI for it. Also, you might want to use sftp instead of ftp in any case (ftp tunneled over ssh).

Woah woah woah! I'm done using the mac, djo! Another thing: I don't want to have my computer on (and we're talking PC here) thus having an FTP directly to my game folder would not be possible since my computer wouldn't be on all the time.

I had in mind something like using my webspace provider, using an FTP on my website.

The more I think about it, the more I see that FTP is a bad idea because of the fact that people could mess up the turn files like you said.

For every expert that tells you that leaving the PC on will shorten it's life, you can find one that will tell you that the heat & cool of starts & stops will shorten it's life. Personally, I prefer to leave my PC on and just turn off my monitor. My PC is now old & severely obsolete but still runs great.

Ok Ballbarian, the other problem is that the computer is where I sleep and I am tired of having to hear the powersupply fan.

all night.

Edit: Moving the computer is not an option. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/yawn.gif

Get hosting on Gandalf Parker's linux server. If you already configured the game from the command line, it's the same.
