Problem with SEIV running on Linux with Wine
 

Hi all

I have installed SEIV gold on my Linux Mandrake 9.1 with wine.

I have quite big problem ... any time a try to use a scroll menu I got a violation adress error ... and after that sometimes the game freeze.

I have also tried to install the 1.91 patch but it told me that the is not able to patch the Version I have (that is the 1.60 from the orginal gold ediotion CD).

Someone could help me ? there is some one that is able to use SEIV on Linux with wine

Well theres your problem, Linux is drunk from the Wine. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

(J/K - I wish I could help, but I honestly don't know anything about Linux, and could not pass up the chance to make a funny even a lame funny as the one I did make.)

As for the installation of the patch, you will need to uninstall SEIV, and reinstall it. The patch has an issue with the date addressing of SEIV. Most of us have had to uninstall, reinstall SEIV in order to get the Last (v1.91) patch to install.

what are your settings for wine... and what does the log files say when you get the error ?

I have installed wine form RPM ... I'm not able to find the config file ... it doesn't exist in my ~/.wine/ dir ...

and so I'm also not able to know where the logs are ... they are not in the usual /var/log dir

if I make a find (or locate) wine I'm not able to find any wine dire on my PC with a config file

in my ~/.wine dir there are only 2 dir:
dosdevices drive_c

and 3 files:
system.reg userdef.reg user.reg

... if you could help me ... I have read the wine documentation, but everything start from this config file I'm not able to find anywhere!

Are you running as root? Wine won't run if you're root.

Did you remember to chown -R the entire SE4 directory to yourself? If you didn't, you won't be able to access the files from within the game.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">How are you installing the RPM? Most of the GUIs have a tab listing all the directories its going to add files to.

I think is not a problem o file access since the game start well, I can do most of the things in the creation step ... it breaks when I try to scroll a menu or the races pictures ...

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">This probably has nothing to do with Linux/Wine. It's a fairly common problem that has to do with the time stamp on teh se4.exe file. You can reinstall from the CD and then patch, or try the fix we found in this thread.

OK ... here again!

I have installed Wine from source (first I have disinstalled the RPMS and deleted all the .wine directories) ... than installed Space Empries IV gold and everything is fine ... I can run it as user without any problem ...

but I'm not able to patch the game ... when I start the upadter, I find that I have a Space Empires installed on my PC but It told me that the Versione of Space Empires IV I have instaleld is not correct ...

some one could help me now ?
