Space Empires will run in a functional window (sort of)
With the addition of a little software, SE4 will run in an environment where it can co-exist with the local desktop http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Re: Space Empires will run in a functional window (sort of)
Is it yet another virtual machine? The screenshot is too small to read the title of the window http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
Edit: with help of magnifying glass I was able to read the title: "Microsoft Virtual PC 2004". Is it shareware or freeware? Though it would be fondly to expect freeware from MS http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif [ May 25, 2004, 19:01: Message edited by: aiken ] |
Re: Space Empires will run in a functional window (sort of)
Well, to be completely honest about it, the game will run on a virtual OS that runs in a functional window.
http://Groups.msn.com/ThermodynesPla...oto&PhotoID=32 Its XP pro running over Windows 2K with Microsoft Virtual PC. The app lets you build a virtual machine complete with apps and OS. It is fully functional, and runs beside the host OS. In this case, I am logged into the domain with both OSs at the same time, and on the same NIC. The game seems to run fine, but there is a limit to the amount of "game testing" I can get away with here at work. Being in a cubicle limits my activities quite a lot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif This is a 1024/768 window running on a 1280/1024 desktop http://Groups.msn.com/ThermodynesPla...oto&PhotoID=33 And it seems to drive well, even though this system is very long in the tooth. With the long weekend coming up, I prolly have time to test it out on one of my systems at home. I have XP, 98se and 95 on this box, and it will load any two of the three virtual OSs at the same time. It runs out of ram before the third one loads. |

how much time does it take to set it up for an experienced pc user until you can click once and start the game and run a dvd movie at the same time ?

Hello...
I have used MS Virtual PC extensively to construct individual training environments. I really like the functionality, but note that is is a huge memory hog. The "window" is actually an emulated session that heavily taxes the resources of the host machine. To use it, your really need some decent memory (we used 1GB minimum). I don't readily recall the actual requirement... but it is a consideration. |

edit: 128megs is amount reserved for the virtXP OS. each OS you install has a pre set amount of memory that it takes over on loading. I have 98 setup with 64megs and 95 has 32megs. [ May 25, 2004, 19:36: Message edited by: Thermodyne ] |
Re: Space Empires will run in a functional window (sort of)
OK, I did 200 turns on it Last night and loaded several saved games from one of my other systems with no errors. So I would say it was ready for prime time. All you need is Virtual PC and a copy of an OS to load on it.
