The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
This is an AAR from Ermor's perspective of the Celebrities game.
The game itself had the following characteristics: - MA - 6 players - No diplomacy - Intermediate level (no newbie but no hard core vet either) - CBM 1.84 In the course of the game I got very interested by the strategic developments of this particular game, as well as some of its battles; so I started to record them for my own usage. Later I realized I would make great AAR resource, and I decided to polish my material to turn it into AAR. Note that the AAR has the following characteristics: - as I started by recording the main battles, it is mostly oriented towards analyzing them. However, each major battle originally had a "context" section summarizing the strategic situation; later on I fleshed these up with maps and more explanations to give more a feeling of a real AAR rather than a collection of battles. - by design decision I drafted the AAR thinking of complete newbies, that is, people, not knowing anything about D3. I also avoided speaking "gamey" so every thing is written like in a history book. But pictures should let understand that by "exceptionally skilled in astral magic" I mean, for example, Astral 5. - some text was written "on the spot", some later. When it is written later, I try to replace myself in the original context. - I will try to progress by small but regular bits (it takes time to re-encode the content for posting here) OK without further ad, here it comes... |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Year 1 of the Ascension Wars
Origins Ermor is the true heir of the earlier Ermor Empire, but it has been for ever marked by fool experiments in necromancy. The Death Cult, led by Thaumaturges, has taken control over the empire. http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/967...tiesaar001.png Mors Nihil Est, a great being of stellar rock taking the appearance of a wise Sphinx, has promised them to deliver them from the curse of Death: “Under my blessing, your injured bodies, going through Death as a second birth, shall become light and reunite with the Stars”. At this point he can already demonstrate his Godly powers over sacred Shadow Vestals blessed by Thaumaturges: when stroke with a lethal blow, the stars twist their fates and give them, in practice, a second life. In addition to demonstrating Mors Nihil Est’s divine nature, this power will prove useful to conquer the known world, a condition for the true divine power of the new God to reach their full extent. http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/8...tiesaar002.png Mors Nihil Est, “Death is Nothing”, holds tremendous Astral power (9) as well as impressive Earth power (5). A being of such supreme power had, obviously, made the previous Pantakrator jealous. For this reason, the Sphinx is now inert, his spirit imprisoned in an astral plane far away from this world. His awakening is close, and he can affect the world indirectly through his bless on Shadow Vestals as well as his Dominion, until he finds he way back to his physical incarnation. The Dominion of a Pretender God is the spiritual strength he exerts over the world of mortals. The dominion of Mors Nihil Est is exceptionally strong. The very strict daily rituals all his followers must respect create a society ruled by a severe sense of order, but somehow impacts negatively the production of goods. As a being of stellar nature, he can play with the fate within his dominion and he brings Luck to all his followers’ endeavors, as well as a slightly greater sense of the arcane dimension surrounding them. http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/5...tiesaar003.png Later, when he awakens, Mors Nihil Est will be able to affect the world more directly, mostly by spell casting. In particular, his powers will allow him summoning Granite Cyclopes, creating Golems, forging Crystal magical items and casting a wide variety of powerful Astral spells. The most powerful of those would turn him into the Nexus of Arcane Power of the whole world. Such a powerful spell requires a long preparation and must be used with caution, as it can cause all competing Pretenders to ally in a desperate crusade against him. But it may grant him the key to true Godhood. |

Emergence of an Empire
Spring and summer: set backs in early expansion In early summer, the first army sent by Ermor to conquer the world is made of Velites and Alea Legionnaire holding the centre, and Shadow Vestals on the left flank, ready to turn the enemy. http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/7...tiesaar004.png The Thaumaturge commands over the Vestals and grants them Mors Nihil Est’s bless, Unholy Protection against Banishment and Unholy Power – which makes them move and attack at an unnatural speed. A Centurion commands over the infantry. This army conquers only one province before being defeated in mid-summer by a charge of knights, in the Glimmering Fields. One third of the troops are killed and the rest runs away. http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/5...tiesaar005.png In late summer, a new army is sent to conquer the world, led by the Thaumaturge Sextus, with more Shadow Vestals and the first contingent of undead cavalry, a new specialty of Ermor’s armies. http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/7...tiesaar006.png The defeat of the first Ermorian army by the knights of the Glimmering Field is worrying Ermorian officials. It causes Ermor loosing the competition with other nations for expansion against independent fiefdoms and tribes. http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/3...tiesaar007.png Number of provinces controlled by the world’s nations; early fall in the year 1 of the Ascension Wars. Ermor (violet) is last, while Abysia (red) and Pangea (green) have twice more provinces. |

Immaculate and Valerius, thanks for the kind words.
Onward for an update. Not much happening yet, but the first serious encounters are close now... |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Fall and winter: new horizons, new ambitions
In fall, the mobilization of new armies led by Herminius and Terentius bears its fruit and three provinces are conquered, while most other nations stale or conquer only one or two more. In late fall, expansion continues at a good pace. Battalions of undead cavalry and infantry are victims of progressive attrition, but the Shadow Vestals resist well. Intelligence reports signs of an early war between Bandar Log and Abysia. Bandar Log’s territory is situated immediately in the South of Ermor’s zone of influence. A war between empires so early is surprising, while there are still many independent tribes and fiefdoms, which are much more accessible for conquest. Ermorian officers believe that the warring nations are doomed as they will predictably weaken each other. Ermor should follow the situation very closely to identify potential opportunities. In winter, Ermor has become a relatively large empire, 2nd next to Pangea only in number of provinces. The Empire reaches its natural border in the East, where the other side of the border is controlled by Pangea. In the South, signs of hostilities between Bandar Log and Abysia become clearer. Bandar Log has progressed deeply in Abysian territory, almost reaching the Abysian capital in a daring offensive, but Abysia lunches counter-offensives throughout the winter. In the West, Ermorian armies go beyond their natural borders and meet a small expansion force controlled by Agartha. It appears that neither Agartha nor Bandar Log have the means to control their natural borders, and Ermor plans to seize a few provinces in their zones of influence – without going too far as to not provoke a war escalation. Three provinces are conquered from the Agarthan sphere of influence throughout winter, and preparations are made to enter in Bandari territory as well. Abysia is preserved as Ermor cannot sustain expansionism in all directions, and Ermor wants Bandar Log to have a difficult time in their offensive war. http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/8...tiesaar008.png Strategic map in late winter. Ermorian armies expand into Agarthan territory in the West, Bandar Log has penetrated deeply in Abysian territory but was pushed back by an Abysian counter-offensive, natural borders with Pangea are reached in the East. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Year 2 of the Ascension Wars
Spring and Summer: Expansion in the Abysian – Bandari frontline Overview of Bandar Log Bandar Log is an Indian buddhist-inspired nation of monkey and apes. Their light infantry may appear unimpressive but can swarm unprepared opponents, if rightly used. Their mages are weak but possess a tremendous astral power. http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1...tiesaar009.png Overview of Abysia Abysia is a nation of semi-demonic nature based on fire and blood. Obviously, they possess a most powerful Fire magic, and their troops are almost all immune to flames. Some of their commanders can fight well on an individual basis as well. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3...tiesaar010.png Spring: The Abysian – Bandari war gives Ermor an opportunity for unchecked expansion The Abysian counter-offensive, led by the Anathemant Langoskepu, re-conquers lost territories and progresses towards Bandar Log. By mid-spring, the Abysian army has reached the “natural” border between both nations. http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/9...tiesaar011.png Abysian army counter-attacking towards Bandar Log. In the meanwhile, Ermor has gained a foothold in the Bandari sphere of influence by conquering Batimor, a swampy province, where a fort is immediately being built to consolidate the position. Bandari armies were spotted in neighboring areas, but they seem not to care about Ermor’s modest intrusion. http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/164...tiesaar012.png Geopolitical situation in the Bandari-Abysian frontline by the end of spring. Global situation By now, almost no independent tribe remains – except underwater ones – and all nations have defined their respective borders. Modest conquests in the spheres of influence of weaker neighbors allow Ermor to represent a slightly larger empire than its contenders. http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5...tiesaar013.png The animation of undead cavalry gives Ermor an edge also in terms of army size. On this criterion as well as in terms of number of provinces, Pangea appears to be the most dangerous opponent. The impact of the Bandari – Abysian war appears clearly on this graph. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3...tiesaar010.png Summmer: Bandari intervention During early and mid-summer, more Bandari armies are seen moving to the Abysian frontline. Ermor develops a new war tool: the ability to enchant Mound Kings. These kings of past millennia will be the new generals of the Ermorian armies, freeing Thaumaturges to more arcane tasks than bringing battalions of undead cavalry to the front. They are too weak, however, to participate directly to battles. http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7...tiesaar015.png In late summer, Ermor conquers one more province South East of Batimor, advancing further into Bandari sphere of influence. But at the same time, Bandar Log finally reacts: a large army is dispatched to the key province of Batimor. http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/2...tiesaar016.png http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9...tiesaar017.png Bandari army in the swamp of Batimor, besieging the new Ermorian fort in Batimor. This army is mainly made up of a large quantity of ferocious and sacred Tiger Riders, blessed by a powerful Astral blessing, completed by minor Earth (reinvigoration) and Nature (regeneration) blessings. Monkey light infantry completes the Order of Battle. http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/6...tiesaar018.png All undead cavalry reanimated in Ermor, amounting to two full regiments led each by a Mound King and a battalion of Shadow Vestals, are sent to the neighboring province of Ephesibor to protect Ermor’s holdings in this area and fight back the Bandari army. http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/300...tiesaar019.png Order of Battle of the army sent from Ermor to the frontline The War for Fort Batimor is started, the first large scale military confrontation for Ermor. http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2...tiesaar020.png Overview of Fort Batimor – swamp forts are weak, but the strategic location between three empires makes Fort Batimor quite strategic |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Autumn: phony war against Bandar Log for Fort Batimor
Early autumn (18): encirclement of the Bandari army On early autumn, a large Ermorian army has gathered to fight against the impressive Bandari army. But the strategic situation is more impacted by a small army of Shadow Vestals led by the Thaumaturge Sextus, who had conquered a province East of the Ermorian fort in late summer. In early autumn, Sextus defeats a large group of tiny Markatas supported by a handful of Atavi archers in the province South of the Ermorian fort. http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/2...tiesaar021.png http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/1...tiesaar022.png Shadow Vestals, protected by the astral bless granted to them by Sextus, rout the Markata horde. At the same time, Abysia has re-conquered a lost province nearby, connecting he three empires. As a result, the mainstream Bandari army besieging Fort Batimor is now cut off and completely encircled. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/1...tiesaar023.png In Early Automn, the Bandari besieging army is surrounded on all sides as a result of Sextus’ bold moves and Abysian counter-offensive Mid- and late Autumn (19-20): a war of maneuver for nothing? Ermorian and Bandari main armies all conduct operations without engaging each other, while several skirmishes take place. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/5...tiesaar024.png Operations of mid-autumn The Bandari main army leaves a small force of Tiger Riders to conquer and occupy the fort in Batimor while the main group moves south to break the encirclement. Sextus attacks South the province immediately West of Bandar Log, but is defeated by a significant force of Tiger Raiders coming toward the front – he alone survives and escapes. At the same time, the main Ermorian army, led by the Thaumaturge Attilus, moves from Ephesibor to take back Batimor. A breach is immediately done in the walls of Fort Batimor, now controlled by Bandar Log. The next month, Attilus easily conquers back Batimor Fort, in spite of the brave resistance of the few Tiger Riders left as garrison. http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/4...tiesaar025.png Heroic but desperate resistance of Bandari Tiger Riders at the gate of Fort Batimor Following a season of skirmishes and maneuvers, the situation gets stabilized as both Ermor’s and Bandar Log’s attentions are called elsewhere by more urgent matters: the Abysian war for Bandar Log and a massive attack by Pangea on Ermor's Eastern provinces for Ermor. Throughout this first war, no major engagement took place in spite of the large armies mobilized, but Ermor consolidated its holdings in Bandar Log’s sphere of influence, with now two provinces controlled. http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/5...tiesaar026.png Geopolitical situation by early winter. The Ermorian army moves North as a new threat emerges, while Bandar Log lunches a new offensive against Abysia. Ermor has protected her holdings in the area. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
A quick comment from the Pangaean perspective. I was very worried about the growing strength of Ermor. I didn't feel that I was ready to take him on alone but also felt I couldn't afford to let him get stronger. So I attacked in the hope that it would prompt Agartha to launch an attack from Ermor's west.

Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Valerius:
I see. When you attacked, I did not feel as if you did not have the strength to fight a 1-to-1 war. Re. Agartha, I think at some point he hesitated (based on troops movement), and then got tempted to go for the easy prey. Actually conquering a full nation before engaging me was, I think, a sound strategy from Agartha's perspective. Would you have coordinated well later (which is more difficult with a no-diplo game, of course), Agartha could have (possibly!) crushed me with you. Assuming equal gains from Ermor's spoils, Agartha could then expect to be in a strong position as in having 2,5 spheres against 1,5 for you. And this is how Agartha actually played. I think, ironically, that I would have played strategy-wise exactly as they did... Now that we enter our first war, I will be curious to get your feedback on the more tactical aspect of things! :-) Fellow anonymous readers: From now on the empire of Ermor will be constantly at war, meeting all nations in the battlefield at some point or another, and fighting large scale battles almost every season... |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
I agree that Agartha's decision to go after a weakened Abysia was a good one and profited him nicely. But when I attacked you for the first time Agartha hadn't yet attacked Abysia so I was hoping that he'd also be worried about your growing strength and also that he might hold a grudge over the fact that you took some of "his" provinces during initial expansion (Sixlands clearly divides the six regions and I at least take it as an act of war if someone takes one of my provinces during expansion).
I felt I wasn't ready for you because at the beginning of the war I hadn't yet done the research that would enable me to handle your hordes of undead (I didn't even have many centaur longbows). And I think we'll see this lack of preparation as we follow the course of that first war. I'll definitely give you my perspective on that first conflict. Once that is over I'll be out of the picture for a *long* time as my turtling phase begins. :p |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Excellent AAR. Keep it up.

Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
As the leader of the ill-fated Abysia i would like to add my perspective.
I was very much suprised by the bandari offensive: it was insanely early, much indies still standing. I think, a war this early only bears fruit only if the agressor manages to defeat and conquer the enemy very quickly. I was convinced Bandar Log's army and magic arsenal werent capable of that. In reality Bandar didnt even came close to beat my troops and fire-mage commanders in a quick war even with their blessed sacred cavalry: they not only didnt manage to win quickly but even got beaten back to our "natural" border. I didnt push further, hoping those monkey brains would get the message of peace, but they intruded again, sealing our fates. The monkey army's attempt of conquering Abysia was futile and in vain - and a huge strategic mistake - , but it left the demonic fire-worshipper's realm exhausted and weakened as I spent all my gold on the patriotic war instead of forts and research. It was an excellent move by Agartha to start the invasion, and it was a finely carried out and swift one! Grats! |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Earcaraxe,
Thanks for your perspective. We'll come to all these events in due time... But as we discussed earlier I totally agree with your analysis. Bandar's strategy illustrates quite well the cost of indecisive early wars, both for the attacker and for the defender. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
impressive!
|
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
oh, u r right , i didnt want to steal the storytelling, sorry.
btw, when bandar first attacked, i was counting on your ermor to grab my northeastern provinces, now i see why u didnt. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Thanks Anaconda.
earcaraxe: yeah I did not want to make a "cheap" province grabbing on you and take the risk to maybe kill one of your armies, or to weaken you to the point where you could not resist to Bandar Log. I thought: "Let's have 2 provinces less and an Abysia as strong as possible to sustain this pointless looser-looser war against Bandar Log, rather than 2 more provinces and a victorious Bandar Log on my Southern flank". So you see, we could not speak but I was your friend :-) :angel Seriously, beside pure realistic geopolitics, I had the feeling Ermor had a good understanding with Abysia, and only when you turned AI I sent my armies on your lands. And to make me lie, you are the only nation I did not fight against, except 1/2 unintentional encounters... |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Winter: Pangean offensive and Ermor’s reaction
Overview of Pangea The people of Pangea are barely civilized worshippers of the wild. Half beasts such as minotaurs and centaurs are powerful soldiers due to their sheer strength and wild energy. They possess powerful Nature magic, but also Earth, Blood and Death. http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/4...tiesaar027.png Late autumn and Early Winter (20-21): Pangean Offensive Throughout autumn, intelligence had reported an increasing concentration of Pangean troops at the border. As a reaction Ermor launched a campaign of recruitment of Lion Tribe Archers. These light archers are highly appreciated by Ermorian strategists as Pangean and Bandari troops are lightly armored and vulnerable to missile fire; additionally they have an excellent stamina and can follow armies of undead in forced marches. In Late Autumn, Pangean troops cross the border and walk towards the border fort of Werk Enum. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/440/38423097.png The Pangean invasion army is mainly constituted of a large battalion of Minotaurs, who receive a Haste enchantment at the beginning of the battle. This tactic would be perfectly appropriate against the classical Ermorian heavy infantry as so many Minotaurs charging even faster than normally can easily trample any opponents smaller than themselves. They effectively annihilate the provincial defense in one terrible charge getting straight to the centurion located at the rear, without getting any casualties, not even a scratch. http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/8985/85195082.png They immediately lay siege to the Simple Hillfort guarding the border. The fort was built spontaneously by the local governor, with his own resources. While it cost nothing to the State budget, the fortifications are weak and the Pangean army is successful in making a breach quickly. http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/8...tiesaar028.png The fort is conquered the next month, with large quantities of Pangean reinforcements confirmed. The fall of the hillfort of Werk Enum is not a disaster. Another fortress, built by Ermorian central engineers with the state budget and the highest defensive standards, protects the Ermorian heartland immediately West of Werk Enum. Ermorian strategists analyze that the main Ermorian war asset, the undead cavalry, constitutes a good counter to the Minotaurs as they are too big to be trampled. The terrible Minotaur charge will be stopped by the sheer volume of the undead cavalry, who, although weaker on a 1-to-1 basis, can dominate melee by simply overwhelming the Minotaurs. The main army mobilized against Bandar Log is quickly sent to the new Pangean Front, as well as freshly reanimated undead cavalry. Mid- and Late-Winter (21-22): Ermorian reaction With the situation stabilized in the South, Ermor prepares a powerful counter-offensive, aiming at conquering Pangea. While Pangea conquers Werk Enum, Ermor purchases the services of a group of mercenary siege sappers commanded by a skilful siege engineer. They are intended not so much to take back Werk Enum, as the large number of undead soldiers will be enough the fort’s weak defenses. Their mission is to help in the conquest of the more challenging forts of the very Pangean heartland. http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/4...tiesaar029.png At this point the mass-reanimation of undead soldiers gives Ermor a significant quantitative superiority in open battlefields, and the Ermorian Headquarter is reasonably optimistic about the forthcoming war. http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/9...tiesaar030.png Graph of army sizes by mid-winter of the year 2 of the Ascension War: Ermor has the largest army, approximately twice as large as Pangea. The quality of Pangean units is recognized to be higher, though. Other contenders are way behind, although Pythium, with which no direct contact exists, seems to be expanding rapidly her military. The clash finally takes place in late winter, with a decisive battle between the world’s two largest armies. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Late Winter (23): A costly baptism of blood for the Ermorian legions
Ermor’s soldiers Who are exactly Ermor's legions? The main component of Ermorian legions is undead, who need to receive unholy blessings to reach their full potential: Power of the Sepulchre to boost their offensive potential and Protection of the Sepulchre to protect them, to some extant, from banishment by enemy priests. http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/197...tiesaar031.png Casting these spells is not a mundane task. The powerful versions of these spells, reaching the whole army instead of just a small area, require several Ermorian Thaumaturges to unite their magical strength and/or the presence of a Grand Thaumaturge. The two signature units of the Ermorian army are the Undead Cavalry and the Shadow Vestals. http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/1...tiesaar032.png Longdead horseman under the effect of the Unholy Powers of the Sepulchre (+4 magical resistance, +4 attack, +4 action points) The main strength of longdead horsemen is their speed and maneuverability, both in campaign and in the battlefield. They deliver a good offensive punch at first contact with their light lance. As most undead, their morale is unbreakable and they never get tired by long fights. But the lack of durability is their main weakness as the slightest bow is very likely to disrupt their brittle bones. Moreover, they are vulnerable to banishments by enemy priests, a mass destruction weapon on undead. Actually, their real strength relies in the huge number Ermorian Grand Thaumaturges are able to re-animate, combined with the fact that these huge armies don’t eat and don’t ask for gold. http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/2...tiesaar033.png Experienced Shadow Vestal blessed and under the effect of the Power of the Sepulchre Shadow Vestals present very different characteristics. They are an elite sacred unit, and their number is limited by the high price involved and the limited number of Vestals Ermorian temples can “produce” every month. Once they receive the blessing of Mors Nihil Est, their main strength is their durability against mundane, non magical weapons: their natural etherealness is combined with the blessed twist fate and good defense skills in melee, and they can literally dance in the midst of enemy blades and spears. Very high magical resistance once they are blessed makes them almost invulnerable to banishment. But beside these magical protections, they are actually as weak as any light infantry, and this tactic can be countered by a determined enemy using a continuous rain of missiles and magical attacks. Their offensive power is not exceptional but adequate: they have a good attack skill once they are buffed by the Power of the Sepulchre, but their blows lack strength, and even human medium infantry with adequate protection need to be hit several times to fall. Thanks to their light equipment and to their blessing, they also don’t tire from long fights. They still have a soul, and they can gain experience but are also susceptible to rout in battle. Overall they can be considered as a good (pseudo-)heavy infantry. They complement well the undead cavalry, and are generally used to hold the center of the battlefield, together with standard heavy infantry. Orders of battle Ermor fields an army greater than ever seen: 4 full regiments of undead cavalry on both flanks, a full regiment of Shadow Vestals and another of heavy infantry to hold the center, numerous Lion Tribe archers and crossbow-equipped sappers at the back to provide ranged support. Eight Thaumaturges are present, aiming at strengthening the Undead by Unholy spells and on-the-spot reanimation of soulless or skeleton warriors. http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/4962/...tiesaar034.png The Pangean army is also formidable. It is composed by a large host of Minotaurs, twice as many as the initial invasion force. They are disposed in a formation apparently designed to overwhelm the battlefield on the right flank. http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/5...tiesaar035.png They are supported by Satyr light infantry and flying harpies, in number probably too few to have a strong role in the forthcoming battle. http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/6...tiesaar036.png http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/257...tiesaar037.png Battle The Pangean light infantry goes forward while the Minotaurs hold their ground and receive several enchantments: Haste, Wood Warriors and Legions of Steel. The Ermorian Undead Cavalry easily bypasses harpies and Satyrs, and reaches the Pangean main line on both flanks. The Pangean light infantry has, however, absorbed some of the momentum of the undeads’ charge, and delays the Ermorian infantry and archers. http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8...tiesaar038.png Minotaurs, under the effect of magic enchantments, are now as well protected as heavy infantry, compensating for their lack of defensive skills with their axes. Pans, Pangean mage-priests, spam banishments on the undead. Tactics are forgotten as a confused melee ensues on all the battlefield’s width. http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5...tiesaar039.png The melee takes a heavy toll on both sides. Ermor gets in a more favorable position when archers and mercenary crossbowmen finally get in range of the Minotaurs, while some of Ermorian undead cavalry succeed to reach Pangean commanders on the left flank. http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/4...tiesaar040.png Rain of arrows on the minotaurs No side routs as both soulless undead and berserk Minotaurs have unbreakable morale, and the slaughter continues for a long time. Progressively Shadow Vestals replace fallen undead cavalry on the frontline while the line of Minotaurs gets thinner and thinner. Almost all undead cavalry is destroyed. Maybe Minotaurs could have won the battle, if not for the short-lived reanimation of new undead hordes by Ermorian thaumaturges. Reanimated soulless warriors head toward the frontline in great numbers. Before they make contact with the exhausted Minotaurs, Pangean commanders, three of which have fallen to outflanking undead cavalry, choose to retreat. http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/5...tiesaar041.png Ermor's decisive weapon: Minotaurs could destroy almost all undead cavalry, but a horde of newly risen soulless soldiers is heading towards them. http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/742...tiesaar042.png The last berserk Minotaurs and one more mage too exhausted to save his life are finally slaughtered by the undead, and Ermor takes control of the Werk Enum province. Aftermath Pangea has thrown all the Werk Enum’s garrison in the battle, so Ermor takes back the undefended fort the next month. The battle has been bloody for both sides, as is best illustrated by the army size graph. However both sides still have large reserves at their disposals. http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/529...tiesaar043.png In these conditions, the war against Pangea is far from over. Another Pangean army, much smaller, has simultaneously attacked in the Southern part of the border, and will have to be dealt with. They are supported by an amphibious presence in the strategic sea of Boat Eater. http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/6...tiesaar044.png Strategic situation at the aftermath of the battle of Werk Enum (star), with directions of the main offensives. Here it appears clearly that the great losses of the battle of Werk Enum have not exhausted Ermor and Pangea’s war capacities. However, Ermorian strategists consider the outcome as positive, giving Ermor an enhanced quantitative advantage and illustrating the Ermorian superiority in battle thanks to the endless reanimation of soulless warriors. The fearsome Minotaurs have fought well but, as expected by Ermorian strategists, they can be countered by adequate number of undead cavalry. Thus, the decision is made to lunch a grand offensive on Pangean territory once Werk Enum is taken back. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
One more note on Abysia. While it posed a problem for me when Agartha didn't join in the attack on Ermor I wasn't unhappy at the thought of Aby being eliminated. My pretender was an Oracle with Dom 10 and great scales and I planned to go heavily into blood and mass produce vampire lords. The only nation that I thought would be able to stop the spread of my dominion was Aby (this was also the only other blood nation so their removal was also good from that perspective).
Side note: IIRC three of out of six pretenders in this game were Oracles. In case anyone is wondering why they've become more expensive in the latest CBM. :p I agree with your analysis of minotaurs. Nice against size two units, also of some use against easy to hit larger units but not good against cavalry - especially untiring undead cavalry. And with only one attack per round and only two units per square they'd have to get very lucky to get a hit against your sacreds. They were there because I got worried and rushed an attack and that's what I had available. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
i would like to sum up the pretenders in this game, so: abysia's pretender was a rainbowish dom10 blood fountain with weak scales.

FWIW, its really hard to tell from stills of a battle what's going on. Its really too bad you can't get a top shot of the lines of battle at the start, and draw lines to represent troop movements over the course of the battle. But as it stands your battle stills, often zoomed in too close, aren't very informative.
What would be more useful is more world maps or local maps so it was easier to follow the strategic level of the conflict. |

Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Finally an update is upcoming! I had to fill the "holes" in my notes as I have detailed notes taken on the spot starting from turn 40, but not so much before.
Valerius: Re. Oracles, my pretender was an Oracle-like also actually, as it was a Sphinx. No ability to join battles by teleporting, but diversity to Earth magic. The main rationale being that Cyclops, used as Earth mages, would make undead hordes competitive longer by granting them "Army of..." battle enchantments. A side bonus being the accessibility of crystal items. Re. minotaurs, in theory they are not so bad against Shadow Vestals I think, considering the limited number I can produce. Our battles don't really let us see because they were mainly fighting against longdead cavalry, and here they are clearly uncompetitive. But we'll see your other battlefield weapon in this update... Squirrelloid: nice to have you on board. Thanks for the constructive feedback, it is good to know what my customers want... I have updated the forthcoming notes to integrate more maps and wider snapshots from the battlefields. However I will not follow up the suggestion of drawing arrows on battlefield views. D3 re just too chaotic, each of them having a wide diversity of troops, items, spells interacting with each other, it is already difficult to summarize them in a few lines. A good solution, mind you, would be to use a soft like Fraps to capture a vidop, upload on youtube and embed it in the AAR. Maybe one day... Larz and LDiCaesar: thanks. I always felt there should be more D3 AARs as the game is quite spectacular and, somehow, narrative; plus it is a good way to discuss tactics and strategies with concrete situations. Now rather than ranting, I just did it... and I hope others will join, I'd love to read some others' AARs. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Year 3 of the Ascension War
Global Strategic Situation http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/895...tiesaar045.png The global geopolitics shows a world at war, with no nation yet taking a clear lead. South of Ermor, the Bandari-Abysian war is still going on. Bandar Log, however, already weakened by the Ermorian hold on two provinces of her sphere of influence, now has a second front: Pythium made her move and is invading Bandar Log’s Eastern provinces. Bandar Log is involved in conflicts with all her three neighbors, the price to pay for having attempted and failed an early invasion of Abysia. West of Ermor, the small Agarthan nation concentrated Ancient One soldiers in a fortress near the Ermorian border. Agartha keeps a defensive stance but could attack Ermor any time. A line of fortifications is being built along the natural border line, with provinces in the Agarthan sphere being buffer zones. (*) East of Ermor, Pangea consolidates her armies with new recruits to prepare an expectable Ermorian counter-offensive. (*) Ermorian strategists apply the doctrine of elastic defense: to prepare two lines of defense, with defense assets concentrated in the second line. The first line, either provinces defended only with provincial garrisons or lightly defended forts, are intended to give time to prepare a strong reaction, weaken a bit the attacker and provide useful information on the enemy’s tactics to fine-tune appropriate counters. The first phase of the war with Pangea illustrated this strategy, with the fort of Werk Enum being the first line easy sacrificed while the counter-attack was being prepared. This strategy, of course, implies having enough territories, and possibly spending budget on more forts. In terms of number of provinces, Pythium, Pangea and Ermor dominate. Pangea and Ermor have the most forts. Pangea has an exceptionally high income: her Pretender God’s dominion is very probably supporting life, fertility and economic activity. The two next graphs show the arcane power of the contending nations: magical gem income and research. http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/3...tiesaar046.png Magical gem income. Ermor is in the lower average, greater only than the two early warring Bandar Log and Abysia. http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/2...tiesaar047.png Research done on discovering new spells. Ermor is last, even lower than Abysia weakened by an early war. Note how Agartha, the only nation at peace, is very quickly progressing: the “dividends of peace”? Ermorian Grand Thaumaturges, busy re-awakening the dead, devote little time researching. In Ermor magical research is the business of lesser mages only, and Ermor is progressing much slower than her competitors in discovering new spells. This is the result of the sharp strategic decision to devote all the most powerful mages to re-animation tasks only. The bad result in gem income, however, is a concern of Ermorian Thaumaturges. But the lack of magical diversity of the Ermorian mages, skilled only in Astral and Death magics, makes it a challenging issue. The lack of theoretical magical power is not an immediate concern for Ermor’s wars, however. The key winners on the battlefield are considered to be the maneuvering abilities of the undead cavalry and the animation of skeletons and soulless warriors fallen on the battlefield, and Ermorian strategists consider these weapons competitive enough for the battles to come. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Spring and Early Summer: Ermorian Offensive on Pangea
In early spring, both Emor and Pangea consolidate their frontline armies, depleted from the recent engagement at Werk Enum. In spring, Valerius, the Pretender of Pangea, scores a significant achievement by casting the first Global Enchantment: http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/3518/...tiesaar048.png The flow of raw nature power generated by the spell will provide Pangea with a powerful fuel for her wars. This only confirms the importance of a swift and successful offensive. From mid-spring to early summer, Emor’s thaumaturges lead Ermorian armies on the path of easy victories while Pangea retreats to the safety of fortifications. Ermor takes back her provinces and lays siege to the first line of Pangean fortifications at two locations simultaneously. http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/7...tiesaar049.png Ermorian offensives from mid-spring of early summer of year 3. Other world conflicts are more or less frozen. Ermor maintains strategic reserves far away from the Pangean front, especially in the vicinities of the fluid Bandari / Abysian border. By mid-summer, Ermor is ready to storm the Northern fortress of Birman Highs. http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/314...tiesaar050.png |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Mid Summer (28): Pangean wall of frenzied flesh, spear, hoofs and blades at Birman Highs
Orders of battle Mors Erit Tua Sponsa (“Death will be your bride” *) is the first Ermorian Grand Thaumaturge commanding in a battle. He possesses exceptional magic powers. (*) name inspired from the song "Death will be my Bride" by Brandan Perry, very “MA Ermorian” singer http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/481...tiesaar051.png He commands over a large army to storm the fortress, although smaller than the army winner of the Werk Enum battle five months earlier. It has 2 regiments of undead cavalry instead of four. Sappers and Lion Tribe Archers of the Werk Enum battle are here to provide ranged support. Ermorian heavy infantry and Shadow Vestals are deployed at the forefront to secure the breached gate. A wave of skeleton infantry re-animated during the siege is expected to absorb the first shock of contact. Eight Thaumaturges provide additional magic support to Mors Erit Tua Sponsa. http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/9...tiesaar052.png Ermorian deployment Pangea, on the other hand, fields a new army, composed of soldiers not yet deployed in large engagements: Revelers. http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/7...tiesaar053.png Revelers look life the Satyr light infantry who played the role of cheap cannon fodder during the last battle, and were underestimated by Ermorian strategists. They present two unique and decisive characteristics. First, the ability to realize hoof attacks at the same time than a spear attack is overwhelming for their opponents, and creates a very strong impact on a limited space. Second, they share the same berserker ability than Minotaurs. These two martial characteristics are reinforced by their unnatural vitality and the enchantments they receive from Pans commanding them. Among Pans, one of them has been equipped with powerful war gear and leads the defense of the gate as a warrior rather than mage. http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9...tiesaar054.png Finally, the superior arcane power of Pangea has unlocked two new powerful offensive spells for Pangean mages: Blade Winds, repeatedly thrown at the Ermorian infantry bottlenecked in the breach, and Strength of Giants, giving a new strength to each reveler’s spear or hoof blow. Ermor’s research, in comparison, has not made significant progress in terms of battlefield magic. Battle The result is an unbreakable wall of frenzied flesh, spear, hoofs and blades against which the Ermorian army lacks shock power. http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/5...tiesaar055.png Ermorian infantry stopped by the Pangean wall of frenzied flesh, spear, hoofs and blades. The Lion Tribe archers rout from the battlefield, hit by rocks thrown from the walls, even before the first contact of Ermorian infantry with the revelers. Shadow Vestals and the crossbow-equipped Sappers, fighting with determination, inflict some casualties on the Pangean Revelers, but too few. The Ermorian undead cavalry and the re-animated soulless warrior horde are bottlenecked by the limited space of the gate and cannot bring any decisive contribution; they get slaughtered at the gate by Blade Winds, banishments and ranged attacks from the walls before reaching contact with the enemy. The Pangean revelers finally push back the Ermorian infantry, while Pan mages now throw their Blade Winds from afar on the Ermorian back line of mages, killing several of them. At this point, the brave mercenary sappers prove their worth by lunching a suicidal charge on the counter-attacking revelers. http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5...tiesaar056.png Out of arrows, while Shadow Vestals are either killed or are routing, the mercenary sappers charge the victorious revelers with their pick axes. The few surviving sappers finally routing are the last from all Ermorian soldiers leaving the battlefield. Aftermath and the new strategic situation The Birman Highs battle is a disaster for Ermor, burying the grand ambitions of conquering Pangea for a long time. http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8...tiesaar057.png Ermorian strategists understand that siege battles cannot be won with the same weapons which dominate open battlefields. Ermor’s Grand Thaumaturges decide the development of new weapons strengthening the shock potential of Ermor’s legion, in view of future siege battles: Banes, Wights and Behemoths. This defeat is somehow alleviated by a minor victory obtained the same month in the Sea of Boat Eater. http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/9...tiesaar058.png Underwater engagement won by Ermor in the Sea of Boat Eater. But more importantly, a new Bandari offensive has been lunched in the South with guerilla forces. http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/3...tiesaar059.png Bandari troops lunching a new (desparate?) attack on Fort Batimor while Ermor is defeated by Pangea in the Northern front In this challenging context, the Ermorian headquarter revises down its ambitions and orders a general retreat from Pangea. The new objective on the Pangean front is simply to hold the “natural” border line, while recovering the two Bandari provinces. The new conflict in the South is not considered as a high-level strategic threat. Ermorian strategists are rather surprised by the monkey’s warmongering, as Bandar Log is considered too weak to sustain a new war with Ermor. Bandar Log’s war capacity seems exhausted as the monkeys are already fighting against both Abysia and Pythium. A relatively large Abysian army is seen conquering back Abysia’s natural border with Bandar Log. http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1...tiesaar060.png Overview of the chaotic Southern Front in mid summer. http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/103...tiesaar061.png Abysian army securing their sphere of influence against Bandar Log. Ermor has kept strategic assets in the area: the reserve army which just conquered the Sea of Boat Eater, assassins and volunteer militia. Ermor decides to keep a strong army at the Pangean border as a deterrent for new Pangean invasions, and to send all new resources to the Bandari front. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Autumn: Decline the Southern kingdoms
From late summer to autumn, the two Southern nations of Bandar Log and Abysia, exhausted by constant warfare, have stopped fighting with each other: they now have to defend their lands against their three more powerful neighbors. http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2...tiesaar062.png Overview of the Southern kingdoms in late summer. Their relative weakness attracts more and more attention from their more powerful neighbors (arrows) Ermorian and Pythian pressures on Bandar Log The Agarthan progress on Abysia does not benefit Bandar Log, now engaged against two more powerful nations: Pythium in the East and Ermor in the West. Ermorian strategists clearly see in the weakness of Bandar Log an opportunity for expansion. This opportunity could have been neglected for other potential ventures, if Bandar Log had not forced Ermor’s hand by lunching a new attack on Fort Batimor. Stabilization of the Pangean front lets Ermor engage with Bandar Log with full forces. The Bandari army besieging Fort Batimor is easily defeated in two steps: assassins murder the only two commanders, letting veterans from the Pangean front, led by the Grand Thaumaturge Redemptio, rout the Tiger Riders in early autumn. The army moves on to liberate the neighboring province of Morn Woods against the small force of Tiger Riders occupying it. http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/4...tiesaar063.png The small force of Tiger riders responsible for the attack on Fort Batimor and the new war with Ermor bravely charges the Ermorian army, in vain. They get encircled, rout but get almost all slaughtered In Mid-autumn, now that Ermorian field armies are mobilized in this area, with no immediate threat elsewhere, field Thaumaturges decide to push their advantage forward. http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5...tiesaar064.png Situation on the Bandari front by mid-autumn. The Ermorian legion does not seek contact with Bandari armies and targets poorly defended provinces, while Bandar Log has to engage Pythian armies in the East In the East, Pythium resists Bandari counter-offensives and consolidates her position with a new fort in the bandari sphere of influence. Bandar Log seems to have deployed important resources to this front, to no avail. http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/1...tiesaar065.png Bandari field army defending Western provinces against Pythium, as observed in late summer Pythian tactics, as observed by Ermorian spies, seem to revolve around combining heavy infantry with magic communions throwing thunder strikes. http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/5...tiesaar066.png Pythian army observed in late fall By late fall, pushed back by Ermor and Pythium, Bandar Log only controls a few provinces around her capital. No major engagement still took place between Ermorian and Bandari armies. http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/5...tiesaar067.png Bandari kingdom by late fall. Ermor intends to continue progression in provinces the furthest away from the Bandari capital, on the former Abysian/Bandari frontline, expecting Bandar Log to concentrate her forces against Pythium who seem to target more directly the Bandari heartland. Agartha’s conquest of Abysia In late summer, a scarce intelligence report speaks of Agarthan ownership over a province considered to be Abysian. In Early autumn, more detailed intelligence confirms a large-scale invasion of Abysia by Agartha. Agartha is a nation of strange cave-dwellers with a strong connection to Earth Magic. http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/6...tiesaar068.png http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/6...tiesaar069.png The Agarthan invasion army as observed in early autumn. The Agarthan main weapon is veteran Ancient One soldiers receiving a double Fire (attack skill) – water (defense skill) bless. Mages grant them additional enchantments increasing their strengths and re-enforcing their armors. http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/3...tiesaar070.png The army observed has many human mages known as Golem Crafters, but the real leaders of the Agarthan armies are the Oracles of the Ancients. http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/665...tiesaar071.png Abysia seems totally overwhelmed by this unexpected onslaught. Agartha progresses very quickly, reaching the Abysian capital before the end of Fall. http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/323...tiesaar072.png Progress of the Agarthan invasion by late autumn (black-colored area shows provinces conquered throughout autumn) At this point, Ermorian strategists, busy with Bandar Log, begin to think that they have to anticipate Abysia’s fall to Agartha soon. They hesitate between invading Abysia neighboring provinces and refrain from intervention so that Abysia can defend herself against Agartha. In any case, it looks like Ermor will soon share a very long border with a powerful Agartha. Ermor’s new weapons The new weapons designed after the lesson of Werk Enum start to get fielded by Ermor. A small number of Behemoths, of Wights and Banes with magical weapons should provide additional shock power in the confined areas of breaches, during fort storms. http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/6...tiesaar073.png http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5...tiesaar074.png http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/6...tiesaar075.png Ermor plans to use these new shock troops for a possible storming of Bangar Log’s capital. Additionally, the recent discovery of the Crystal Academy in one of the Ermorian province, on the border with Agartha, opens up new perspectives in combining Earth Magic with Astral magic. http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5...tiesaar076.png http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/4...tiesaar077.png Crystal Mages allow the addition of a new, unexpected weapon: War Minotaurs. They identify the mythical Labyrinth just East of Ermor, a very powerful site allowing the recruitment of the savage half beasts. Ermorian strategists esteem that their main strength is to be unexpected in an Ermorian army: Ermor's enemies will prepare counters against Undead Hordes but probably not against large berserk beasts. http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/4...tiesaar078.png http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/1...tiesaar079.png Finally, the Ermorian Grand Thaumaturges have started to enchant simple wooden statues into telestic animates. The statues have limited unholy powers and can re-animate large numbers of skeleton foot soldiers. http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/7...tiesaar080.png |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
A few comments related to the Pan/Ermor war.
Revelers are probably my favorite Pangaean unit. They have some issues defensively with poor protection, no shield, and lowered defense when they go berserk but they make up for that by packing quite a punch. They are size two units with two attacks per round so they can dish out 6 attacks per square. And as Numahr mentioned, that kick attacked isn't fixed damage but tied to strength. So when their strength is buffed or they go berserk that second attack also gets better (unlike the typical cavalry hoof attack). This is of course a nice feature of Pan's centaurs as well. The recently fought battle was very important to Pan as losing that fort would have given Ermor access to the Pangaean heartland. I had a decision to make as I had 50 centaur longbows hidden in a neighboring province. Do I break siege and have the longbows join in the fight or do I try to defend the fort with what I've got and sneak the longbows in for use next turn? While the longbows would have been an enormous help I didn't want to risk being flanked so I decided to take advantage of the castle walls and wait in the fort. And of course if Ermor had decided to just send in a scout to see what was inside then I would have had the combined forces available next turn (and the longbows wouldn't have been in his scouting report). There had also been one other development that downgraded this fight from crucial to very important. I had found enchantresses and my first or second one had been an F2. I could research flaming arrows in two turns so I felt that even if I lost the fort everything wouldn't be lost. I also want to mention one other thing here. This was of course a no diplomacy game but that doesn't mean you can't read signals and it doesn't mean you are forced to fight every war to the death. In this case Ermor and Pan basically reset things and stopped fighting, deciding they didn't want to be stuck in a similar situation to Bandar/Abysia. |
Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Just a word to say that the AAR is not dead a tall, as I have 80% of the material ready. But with the birth of my first child this week, I had less time these days for D3, and this time was focused on staying on top of things in the only one game I participate to, as a "survival ration" of D3. Very soon I'll come back to the AAR as well.

Re: The Seven Year War of Ascencion, AAR from Celebrities from Ermor's POV
Numahr, thanks for doing this AAR! I've been quite enjoying your write-up. Of course you'll be putting things on the back burner for a while (RL naturally comes first), but hopefully not for too long as I have been eagerly awaiting the next update.
And congratulations on the new addition to your family! :) Hopefully you haven't named your child anything too thematic. Necro-Caesar, or Wormgut or something might not go over too well with your wife. :D |
