Assassin leaders with troops

When an assassin that can have troops, such as the Machaka Bane Spider, attempts an assassination, will their troops join in the attempt?

Just ran a test game, the answer is no.

...although I've sometimes wondered if it would be a spiffy feature if an assassin with Heroic Leadership could bring his stealthies along.

Sort of - they are automatic combat summons, and an assasination attempt IS a combat, even if a special case.

You could put a Wraith crown/lifelong protection on your assasin to stack the odds against enemy army commanders.

Yeah; a Skull Talisman or a Bag of Winds can also have similar useful effects.

Doesn't seem quite fair that a commander can bring his bodyguards with him, but an assassin can't bring additional units.

Of course, the reasoning could be that the more people you have involved in an assassination attempt, the more likely it is to be discovered and fail.

Well, the commander has only his *bodyguards* with him in that battle. What use are bodyguards if they won't help if an assasin comes after you?

Re: Assassin leaders with troops

I understand the use of bodyguards, but why not a hit squad?

Bonedaddy:
1. Balance.
2. More than one assassin would never make it into the commander's bathroom unnoticed.

I think balance weighs in more heavily here.

Re: Assassin leaders with troops

I would have to agree with the balance issue. And if you really want to take out a commander, you could always send an SC assassin.

You second argument confirms my earlier observation: the more people you have involved in an assassination attempt, the more likely it is to be discovered and fail.

The really goofy bit is if you have the wolf-calling artifacts. Sure, they make wolves like you, but what are they going to do -- sneak through town, then charge in through the nearest convenient window? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

No. A major requirement for a good assassin though is the ability to either find or create the right circumstances for an assassination. You're right that doing it with wolves might be tough in many situations (seems like wolf summons wouldn't work in desert, swamps, or as you say, cities). I'd expect the assassin might try ruses to tempt commanders out into the woods in order to use a wolf-summoning trap. Or if the wolves could really be controlled, smuggling them to an unexpected place in town - if it worked it would add a surprise element! Or maybe the item summons them in the astral-plane-crossing sense.

However, there is certainly room for more detail in determining the chances of successful assassination by different means in different circumstances.
