DOMII PBEM game update

Well, for those of you who already know, I've set up a game where i'll basically be running a 24/7 server for a game. There yet remain 3 spots available. The IP is 128.62.46.217, port number 2003. The deadline for joining is the changing from Wednesday to Thurday at midnight, my time, which is to say, oklahoma time.
Game map: Desert eye
Independants: 6
Magic Sites: 45
Hall of fame: 15
Random events: rare
Research: Standard
victory: normal.

Just one request, even if you are the Last person joining, please do NOT press start game. For some reason when it gets done by anyone but me, i end up with all sorts of untellable problems that we would rather avoid. So, come and play. =)

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">There is a switch --noclientstart that prohibits players from starting the game.

There will be trouble if anyone else starts the game and you haven't specified the map file, game name and game settings with some other switches.

How many people were in at the time, did we have all of them? I think Kristoffer mentioned an option that would prevent anyone from starting the game before the requisite slots were filled.

I was in as Pythium. (Josh: yes, it's me, I finally broke down and started a forum account)

King Lear November 6th, 2003 12:30 AM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

To all of you who have so patiently waited, we near the beginning. The game did go forward, albiet earlier than we had intended, and the consequence was a lack of an Abysian player. We obvioulsy have two options: 1) Continue with the game as it is, or 2) Restart it again, and get the full entourage back in. The choice is up to you.

And next time i'll make sure to check that box preventing other clients =) from pushing start.

So, make your decision, and post a reply. If you want to go ahead and take your turn, the server should be running tonight. if you have trouble, let me know.

trebuchet November 6th, 2003 01:25 AM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

I am sort of anxious to get started, but then again it might be advantageous to restart with the whole crew and then have a quickhost session on Friday or Saturday to get through the first several turns.

I have no problem with either route, so I'll vote "no preference".

josh_f November 6th, 2003 07:50 AM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Who was the abysia player? If they post that they want to play, I vote for a restart. (it being my mistake). Otherwise let's play.

King Lear November 6th, 2003 08:05 AM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

So, basically if you want to play Abysia, and were hoping to, go ahead and post something and we'll get you in. Everyone else, you can go ahead and do your first turn if you want. The new IP for this week is 129.116.46.17, and port remains 2003.

trebuchet November 6th, 2003 06:31 PM

I tried Last night and this morning and couldn't get in. Perhaps your IP has changed?

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

I also am having trouble connecting

King Lear November 7th, 2003 11:10 PM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

sorry bout that. It should be back up. If for some reason its not, it means i have one of my graphics programs rendering something for class, or i'm playing something else and need all the memory i can get. So, if for some reason you cannot connect but you're ready to send in orders, you can send the file to me at [email protected]

what fun!

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Just as an experiment, would someone mind trying to connect to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX port 2012?

I have a game waiting there, mainly I want to see if it works and if people can connect; if so, then I'm willing to host a game there (in addition to the one already going on). My machine is pretty stable and the IP won't change. The only question is whether people can get through.

(Removed IP)

I think that setting it up on your server shall be a better idea. I've been having some unexpected problems with my platform, so sorry bout that guys. Oh, and would you go ahead and re-set the Abysia player. One of my friends jumped in, and then decided that he couldn't play. Sorry to everyone who was playing over in the previous game.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Wait, now I'm confused... I thought Trebuchet's game was another *new* game. If not I chose the wrong nation - instead of Ulm in King Lear's game I chose Arco. So if we're switching hosts we'll have to change that somehow.

trebuchet November 8th, 2003 11:50 PM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Well, it was intended to be an additional game (if it worked at all), but given that people have been able to connect and it appears to be the only game in town at the moment, I suppose it replaces the original. I'll stick to the agreed upon map/conditions when I start it.

I flipped Arcoscephale back to "open" based on what you said. Feel free to reconnect as any nation now. Pythium, Ctis, Jotunheim and Machaka have players thus far.

I'd like to start the game by Sunday, but if we don't have enough players by then I can certainly wait.

trebuchet November 9th, 2003 07:48 PM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Five people in thus far (Ulm, Pythium, Ctis, Jotunheim, Machaka). So on the theory that more people may see this on Monday, I'll hold off on starting the game til Tuesday, and start it Tuesday morning come hell or high water.

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Due to the demands of work and life in general, I have perhaps been remiss in attending to my bulletin board responsibilities.

I am not at home right now, so I can't check on the status of the server for another few hours. Can any of the other players confirm/deny whether they're able to connect to the server right now? I tested it Last night and it seemed fine, but that was from inside the firewall.

Assuming all is well I will start the game late tonight so that it will be running tomorrow morning.

It should work now, let me know if not; works fine from behind the firewall, but I don't have an outside box to test from.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">It still does not work. Dom2 can't see it, I presume your IP is still X.X.X.X with the server at port XXXX?

I can't ping the server either, but that's probably just your firewall.

Edit: removed the IP address to protect the guilty

I am on pacific time, which I believe is GMT -8

Everything seems to be as it was when I originally set it up; I've just enabled logging which may give me some more insight to the problem. If you're still on, please try again.

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

hmm we should
test if any one can connect when the firewall is disablet (i know its a security risk but for one connection ? like 3 minutes ? thats not so bad
after all you put it up after then anyways
but this way we get to know if that is from your firewall and are you sure its the right ip ?

check it (dom2 does not display it right)
click start --> run type in command
this opens command consule
type in command consule "ipconfig"
and check the ip adress part
if you are using windows it works like this...

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

My IP is static; it will always be the same as what it was. I verified this earlier today.

Removing the firewall is not an option. I just disabled SPI on the off chance that this was causing it problems.

Given this, I will wait to start the game until we're sure we've solved the problems.

Now that we've got the game started, would anyone who has quoted my IP previously in this thread please "X" it out? The ones I saw at first glance were Posts by talos and Phil. No worries, just asking for complicity in my paranoia. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

If anyone at some point loses the IP they can message me privately for it either through the Boards or by email - so there's no reason to take fright.

As of now the game is set to "quickhost", which means it should cycle every time it gets a turn from each player; however fast we play, that's how fast turns will progress. Unless there is any objection I'll leave it that way. If we start to slow down to less than one turn per day, then I'll switch to scheduled hosting.

Shael November 12th, 2003 08:18 AM

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

no need to chage it
as is in quick host mode it waits for every one to make their turn and does not host every day
it hostes when every one is ready wether that takes week or 3 minutes..
but imho one a day is rather good paste a bit faster is no worse IF some one is going to be away for long time (ie 3 days...) it would be nice to inform the rest of us

If I'm taking a while, feel free to prod me, I can be reached at [email protected]

Also, I'll be out of town this weekend, from Friday morning to Sunday evening. I'll be sure to play my turn friday morning, but I won't have access to a computer that I can install dominions on until I get back.

Re: DOMII PBEM game update

Well, it's difficult to get in more than one turn per day since we're all over the map - Finland, France, and in the U.S. California, Ohio, and Texas if I'm not mistaken - but I hold out hope that here in the early game we may be able to do it once in a while.

If I do eventually put it on a schedule I'd either have it host 5x a week (weekdays) or 6 (weekdays and Sunday, Saturday off). But that's getting ahead of things.
