Telemarketing must be cost-effective, or there wouldn't be so many people doing it. I know a telemarketer got me to buy a newspaper subscription once. We have to convince a large number of people not to buy anything from them in order to fight back.

Ah, yes, we have telemarketers down here too. But I never answer the phone at home, my answering machine does that for me. And it has a nice message that says, "Thank you for donating thirty dollars to our charity. When you hear the beep, this amount will be charged to your phone bill. Beep."

One time I got fed up with a particular company constantly spamming me with emails and popup ads. I did a little research on their website and found the email address they used for inquiries into buying their service to spam new products. I then took that email address and signed it up to recieve every newsletter and promotional offer I could find. Don't know if it worked, but it was very theraputic. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Another thing I used to do back when the vultures used direct postal mail marketing campaigns was cut up all my other junk mail and send it back to them in the conveiently provided business reply envelope. Usually only took one time of doing that to get me off that particular mailing list.

I've done quite a bit of this, too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Once there was a company that saturated the entire neighborhood where I lived with business reply cards, putting them on everyone's windshield, doorstep, and who knows where else - they were everywhere. I mailed large quantities of them back to them.

Maybe we could pay the telemarketing industry not to call us, kind of like paying "protection money" to organized crime. Or maybe we could hire organized crime to explain our position to telemarketing industry executives, who would then be given a fair opportunity to respond, while the cement was hardening.

They don't call me anymore. And I never did get one to sing with me.
