Disk First Clash 1985 (conversion from SP2)

Found this in Hapschott's SP2 Scenario Collection here:

http://www.alternatewars.com/Games/S...t_sp2_scen.zip

Anyway; this scenario depicts the actions of the 4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (4 CMBG) during a fictional war in June 1985 as shown in the Kenneth Macksey book "First Clash" which I bought long ago.

The map was converted over from SP2 to WinSP fairly painlessly by Fred Chlanda's WW2Map, but the OOBs and their locations had to be redone by hand; as SPMBT is a lot more granular than SP2; and more information on Soviet forces is available now than during 1997 (which is when the scenario was made).

Contained in the zipfile are:

SCEN034.xxx -- The original SP2 scenario files if you have a spare copy of SP2 lying around.

spscn400.xxx -- The WinSPMBT converted scenario files.

This is still very rough -- version 0.5 level; playtesting needs to be done and fiddling around to get everything to the right feel.

Estimated time to convert: Maybe about 3-4 hours. I'd be able to do it in less if I wasn't so concerned about maintaining as close a feel to the original scenario.

Working on a slightly improved version -- reducing the number of Blowpipes the CAN player has; as it was making life a bit too hard for the other side -- I want it to be challenging; not "all helicopters are burning wrecks in x turns".

Likewise; the SOV side has a bit too many ZSU-23-4s.

This is where purchasing the full version pays off; I was able to use ScenHack to change a group of ZSU-23-4s into ATGM vehicles; without having to rebuy the entire Soviet OBAT for this scenario

Here's version 0.6

Changes:

CAN now gets a pair of CF-104s
CAN has two blowpipe units instead of four
RUS sees two of their ZSUs changed to ATGM vehicles

By the way, I figured out how to convert SP1 maps all the way into WinSPWW2. However; it's kind of unfriendly and requires you to have:

1.) A CD Image (or real CD) of SP2 or SP3
2.) A working install of SPWW2 v2.2 (the DOS version).

Converting OOBs over just doesn't work as there's too much changed between each step; we're like 15 years removed in OOBs from then and now.

Right now; I have the Soviet player expending almost all their artillery on Turn 0 to build a massive smoke screen. Should I change it to about 60% smoke and 40% HE to recreate the effect of the Red God of War in an attack on known enemy positions; or keep as is?

That's easy enough to get around, just mention in the notes that its advisable to set fast arty on for the first turn.

Once for a scenario I bought a bunch of O/M rocket batteries and edited them to have ONLY two volleys of smoke ammo (no HE at all) and cut their cost by like 80%.
These were used to lay the initial smoke barrage for the scenario.
That way the normal artillery can drop HE on known/suspected defensive positions AND retain it's own smoke for AI/player use later in the scenario.

You may try to save the scenario after the massive Soviet artillery fires. Take the saved SpSv files and rename as scenario spscn files. Now, in the Editor, proceed with the scenario allowing for only a few arty smoke fires, say a platoon of FG popping off.

If this scheme does not work for you, let me know and I'll assist.
