If you started this as a human versus human random battle game - then you are stuck with a human V human game.
However - you could go into the headquarters menu (for each side) and set each and every formation to computer control. Plus any waypoints, if feeling adventurous.
Game Guide -> Headquarters Screen
You may still have to manually "end turn" for each player.
Also I am not sure if arty gets auto-assigned in that mode. (I have only ever used computer control to get hordes of infantry across a map to a covered forming up area, in e.g. snow. Then I spend a few turns sorting out the mess the AI made before the final assault, of course!

An AI v AI game will only play right through
if you set up as AI v AI at the very start. We as developers sometimes will do this for various test purposes (usually of the AI).
Scenario games may also allow both sides to be AI - useful for scenario designer testing.
