Final thoughts on an 1890s Boer War/Spanish Am Mod
Today, I have closed down private project Belmont, an 1890s Boer War, Spanish American War, Boxer Rebellion etc. mod. Reason, although I have tried for more than a year and a half, and early on thought I was achieving success, there is no way to simulate the peculiarities of even late 19th century warfare. Soldiers, and formations, insist on acting like 20th century soldiers. The communication difficulties at night, for example, cannot be reproduced. The company rush cannot be simulated. And volley fire is impossible.
It must be said, that I intend NO criticism of anyone. I was attempting to get the game engine to do what it was never designed to do. It was as if I were attempting to plow a field with an airplane, even if it can be done, it cannot be done well.
I hope everyone is having a Happy New Year, and shall go back to driving the Japs out of China.

It is only by pushing a thing that we discover it's limits. Who knows, one day we might see barbed wired.

Re: Final thoughts on an 1890s Boer War/Spanish Am Mod
No game is perfect and so you should not expect your mod to be. Every game has its limitations and so will your mod.
For example, Pre 1999 games only had ugly non 3d graphics and yet they include some of the greatest games of all time. Even with your mods liminations, I for one, would like to play it.
And as for realism, until more powerful computers were developed, realism has always taken a backseat to hardware limitations. In your case you have adverse code to work with. But that doesn't mean you can't succeed.
Good luck m8,
May you one day receive the inspiration to finish your project.

I'm pretty sure we have barbed wire now. (A certain Spanish gentleman springs to mind from the DOS forums!)
