Default new and confused about this battle

ok well i'm not a total newb i've played for a few days.

I'm at little confused by a recent battle i just had...the msg i rx'd told me that 37 of my 38 troops died in the battle (i was victorious), yet when i viewed the battle this wasn't the case.

is this a bug?

Well, that depends on what you mean by "wasn't the case". If you lost 37 out of 38, that looks like you received a severe beating, but managed to barely win. It might not look very much like a win as a result.

On the other hand, sometimes battle replays have little or no relationship to the battle which is actually displayed. This is a bug that has been known to occur from time to time, particularly in older Versions. It seems to have become more prevalent even in single player with 2.08.

Another possibility (besides a bug) is that you were attacked in provinces where you have substantial Province Defense, and/or your mages are fond of creature summoning, or similar effects.

The 37/38 killed only refer to mobile troops. By mobile I mean the troops you recruited in fortresses (and sometimes through events) or summoned via rituals, and are movable when assigned to commanders.

The latter number (38) refers to the number of mobile troops you had at the beginning of the battle, not the total number of troops (which may include mobile troops + Provincial Defense + in-battle unit acuisition via summoning, charming/enslaving/seducing, etc.) The former number (37), however, refers to the number of mobile troops you have at the end of the battle, compare to the starting value. This is why sometimes you get -x kills in report, when you "acquire" enemy units into service in combat.

As you can see, you may have say 20 Provincial Defense units in the combat, so at the onset of battle it looked like you got 68 troops. And at the end of the battle, 37 of your mobile troops are killed, with whatever number of PD, let's say 10. So from your perspective, you seemed to lose only 47/68 = 69%, rather than 37/38 = 97%.

Similarly, if your mages summoned creatures during combat, it may looked like you got more troops than 38, and perhaps not losing as many as 37/38 would suggest.

Hopefully this is clear... I got to stop writing Posts when feeling this sleepy... probably not making much sense...

A possibility, although the original poster did state that he watched the battle, and results seemed to be contrary to the declared victory. If he had been using summons, and his normal troops got slaughtered but summons carried the day, it would still have looked like a victory.

The kind of victory that looks like a defeat tends to be the kind where your forces are massacred, and so are the enemy's, but he manages to flee the field before you do.

Don't beat yourself up too badly.

But, from personal experience, you will be a "total newb" as you put it for weeks to come. hehe Dom 2 is deep ...

My advice is to suck down all the refs, guides, and whatnot you can lay hands on. If it's not on my site, you can find it through one of the links I have. (I mainly host files that are either not available elsewhere, or are hard to find.)

i agree, at the beginning most people are noobs, but this game is so depth you usually learn VERY fast and very much. THen again i guess one will never be able to know everything, you will always discover new things, at least thats how i feel.
