SD and PPB work strangely against units
If you use SD against units (except weapon platform, it's immune to SD) they get the damage but won't be destroyed. So, if you have a drone packed full of armors and its damage resistance is, say, 1000, and you fire at it two times by massive mount SD V (dealing 750 damage per shot) and then level 1 APB (dealing 15 damage) the drone is destroyed.
PPB works well against drones and satellites, but I can't get it working against fighters. I build a large fighter 3, added compulsory components and some engines and small shield generator 3. Thus the ship should have had 60 shields and damage resistance about 20. Still it needed two shots from PPB.

It is because shields on units are part of structure. During simulation, take a look on the red bar of your fighter. It has a value equal to shields+structure ! After a hit by weapon, both red and blue bars drop by the same amount

Does the fact that Satellites and Drones use 'normal' ship components have something to do with it?

Re: SD and PPB work strangely against units
that is wierd, as in earlier Versions PPB did work against fighters as it should -- devastatingly
