I have a player (ok, even more newbie to SE4-PBEM than me ) here who's interested in joining 1+2, but he's out of town atm and will come back Sunday evening (appr.).

Pointed him to this thread and told him to PM/email you, but I don't know if he really did.

As for AI the most effective work around to this problem so far is to simply use an American instead, they tend to put up a bit more of a fight than your average Artificial Idiot.
